Water drainage fix through Wiper grate?

Surprisingly, there isn't a ton of rust, but this concerns me. In the small grate in front of the windshield, I pulled out about a gallon of wet leaves.

Then I took off the front fenders and it appears to drain right into the inside of the fender.

And this is what I found sitting inside the fender:

I don't know HOW it didn't rust through, but is there a "fix" to prevent that crap from just sitting under the grate AND inside the fender?

I'm also thinking about cleaning up that cracked rubber (or whatever it is) and putting some polyester gelcoat over it. What do you think about that?

I believe the cracked up rubbery stuff is sound deadening material. It looks like the same stuff that is under the seat and the bins.

I'm about to dig into the same space on my FB. the joint on the windshield wiper cleaner line busted and a full reservoir of fluid dumped right into that area. I'm guessing mine is going to look about the same.

The drain line that your arrow is pointing to is the front drain for the sunroof.

So where does the water from that wiper area go? And how the heck did I get leaves down in my fender?

Simple, you have it apart, pour water in the cowl vent and see where it comes out. Right now my cowl water comes inside and dribles out the crotch vent. I foamed the wrong spot when I put the car back together and blocked the normal drainage pathway.

When I took the cowl cover off my '85 GS, it was packed full of leaves, so I don't think that is too unusual...there were a ton of them in the dash vent passages as well. As for where the water drains, I can't help you there, but will be interested to find out.
