Why are you dumping the Mazda rear end, are you aware there are several cars running 8s with the stock rear, both of mine run RX7 LSDs

Seriously? I figured I would be fine until I hooked up with slicks. Honestly my main motivation is the lack of gearing available for the FB rear. I plan on using a power glide trans, and I don't want to have to cruise at 3500 rpm to maintain highway speeds.

The RWD Mazda 626 had a 3.6 ratio ring and pinion which can be used in our 7s, that may be your answer although I'd suggest at least a turbo 350 or even a 4 speed auto for a daily driver. Lots of advice and knowledge at www.v8rx7forum.com

Well the glide has the same final ratio as the th-350 and is actually much better suited for our cars than any other auto GM offers(for drag racing purposes). They have a lot less parasitic power loss than any gm tranny, they are lighter, super durable, and they help in the traction department with that long first gear. I had an 88 with a 350 and a glide with a manual valve body. Serious gearing issues though. It ran a 13.5 at 84 mph.

well then hit up granny's speed shop if you want a 8.8 or 9 inch direct bolt in...

The Volvo 240s and 740s have Dana 30s or 33s in them available in limited slip or locked, and they all have disc brakes. I imagine there are quite alot of gearing options for the Dana rear ends seeing as how they came in jeeps, and various other vehicles. There is I've heard they can handle quite a bit of abuse.
volvos are really heavy and the offset that you will require is near imposable to find except using fwd wheels. try this ..

If he does this swap he's wasting his time. Do you really think a Dana 30 or 33 rear end is much stronger than the stocker? The Dana 35's in the jeeps, which is a stronger axle, can be wrecked by a stock jeep engine without a problem. Talk to anyone in offroading and they will say the 35 is the weakest axle out there. The 35 only has a 7.5" ring gear and a weak housing. The 30 is the smallest axle Dana makes, making it the weakest. I doubt it would take much more abuse than the stocker. Just do a ford 8.8 swap and be done with it. Don't waste your time with this volvo ****. If you wanna use a Dana axle though, at least use a Dana 40, its still not nearly as strong as a ford 8.8 though.

Agreed.
The Dana 30-35's are horrible units that barely survive behind the anemic 4 banger Wranglers, let alone the 4.0L sixes.Anyone who has any plans for building a Jeep immediately ditches them and goes with a 44 or better.I would take a look inside that Volvo rear and see how thin the axles are and how small the ring is,before you run it.Dana 44's are very cheap now that the Jeep crowd is ga-ga over Dana 60's.The 44 can be had in almost any width, and gears/lockers abound. Its probably the most used rear/front end in truck-dom.........

Got my rear out of a 70's narrow track CJ for 100 bucks.
The frontend was free out of a Scout.I narrowed it and tilted the C's for caster.

I dont know of any 1st gen stock rear that has run in the 8s..
there are a few 2nd gens running turboII rears but that is a different setup than a 1st gen..

I think i remeber one or two gutted 7s running the gsl-se rears in the high 10s but it was due to their weight and high gear ratio that kept their axles from snapping
