Very Very bad shaking...pls help

I was driving home from a short trip when my car (1985 base) started shaking very very violently...i took it out of 5th gear, and put it in 4th, as soon as the gear engaged the shaking stopped, so i put it back in 5th and all was good. a few minutes later, it happened again, but putting it into 4th didnt help, it wouldnt stop shaking. i made it to the next exit, and it seems to be driveable under 20 miles an hour, although this may just be because it doesnt shake as badly.
please help, any suggestions, comments, thoughts would be most appreciated.
i thank you in advance for your time.

get up under the car, and see if you can physically shake the drive shaft... I think thats your problem...

Yelp bad u joints, Id guess the rear one.

When I dropped mine in my car I was going really really fast

Jack the car up , and shake the driveshaft up down back and forth if it moves any at all. Its screwed..

i had an old 66 stang that vibrated like going into warpdrive on star trek, i disconnected the drive shaft and turned it 180 degrees and reattached it, stoped the vibrations, must have been warped .or balanced to only work one way,,,, good luck....go with the u-joints first..

Yep....U-Joints

Save yourself a lot of hassle....Order one from Mazdatrix. Hear me now, believe me later. See the thread on this page regarding replacing U-joints.
