Personal Opinion: The Mazda engineers did a great job designing the RX7 - so far I am finding it to be uncomplicated and easy to work on, with most parts accessible and simple to remove. Perhaps in that regard I am lucky to have an SA.......I love simplicity under the hood!! That said, I have yet to successfully assemble a WORKING vehicle - but I remain confident.
Kudos also to the RX7 Forum for the incredibly vast amount of information!! It gives me a lot of confidence to know that there are resources (including supportive members!) out there.

Yes, simplicity is what the 1st Gen is all about and is one of the main reasons why I love it so much. It's simplicity makes it a joy to work on and is it's best kept secret! So many "boinger" mechanics are afraid of the rotary but in reality it is vastly simplier and easier to work on than those "old skool" boingers.

haha, I was just worrying about cramping the bay with the new motor and all that comes with it.
It will still be easier than working on my crown vic.
its got a smaller engine bay than you would think.
+ its got A/C lines and pump, powersteering lines and cooler, oil cooler, and transmission cooler.
thats a whole lotta lines and fitting and **** to get around.

Yep, I was under my 7 a little while back doing a brake line upgrade and I just sat under there a while and thought "this is why these cars are so great" they're just beautifully simple.

Simplicity is so key. I love working on my 1st gen. I originally bought it as a second car to my 3rd gen. Since then, I've enjoyed the 1st gen so much I am now selling the 3rd gen. Don't get me wrong, I love the 3rd gen too, but it's no where near as user friendly

Yes they are really easy to work on
. I can't wait till I finaly get a job somplace. So I can start making money to collect more parts and maybe more 1st gens. I don't think 1 is enough.

Yeap, oil filter, oil pan drain bolt easy to access with headers installed from above! This makes regular maintaince simple! That is the coolest part of owning a 1st gen. Anyway, engine removal is a simple job too with a overhead hoist and rafters in your own garage. Just the bare essentuals kept under the hood and 1st gens are the best!!! IMO Especially for overall access of most things that is.
