I agree.
I get the same thing with my 2.8L V-6 Samurai......."Thats a junk engine!"......"They came from the factory with a rod hanging out the block!"........"The 4.3L is a way better mill!"........heard em' all!
Mose issues people have with the little Chevy V-6 is that they treat it like a 90* smallblock based V-6.The 60* engine was new in the 80's,not the 50's like the 90* smallblock V-8 from which the 4.3L and others were patterned off.....development time, people!!Its no gonna be perfect right off the bat.
It doesnt have tons of headbolts, and they have to be replaced everytime they are removed....thats why people blow headgaskets all the time. Its not built heavy and thick like the 90* engines, its a FWD/RWD and Midships designed engine. Its supposed to be compact and light(er). The Chevy is similar to the Ford in that it was used extensively for years and year, often in heavier and "unloved" lines of cars and trucks. Its no wonder they never got any respect, despite being a widely used, and succesful powerplant.
