upgrading 85 GSL-SE exhaust

I am looking to replace my entire exhaust system in my 85 GSL-SE since my factory one has a leak and probably wont pass inspection next year. This car is a semi daily driver (It shares road time w/ my truck) so it needs to be street legal. Im not a big fan of the coffee can muffler sound or appearance but still want added power from the upgrade. I also plan on doing the work myself so it should bolt onto my car with no bending or welding if possible.

Does anyone have any recommendations for brands or vendors?

thanks -Erik

Check out www.mazdatrix.com , they have catalytic converters that will bolt up to the RB header. So long as there is no visual inspection and the car is in a good state of tune, it should pass. That way you get some extra power that you wouldn't get from just a muffler and it will still pass the sniffer test. I believe that Mindtrain also has a header/catalytic converter system, but I'm not sure on that one.

i have an 84 gsl-se and this is what i plan to do in 1 year...

get the bonez hi-flow cat and the racing beat muffler, then have a connecting pipe fabricated at a muffler shop...this will increase performance, keep it clean and quiet AND make it legal...at least in my state

this may be an option for you...

get racing beat streetport exhaust system. then keep your exhaust and fix it and use that for the emissions test.

The muffler link is not Racing Reat's, but Rotary Rerformance's...

That is what I'm planning to do as well (get Bonez cat and one of those mufflers... except can't decide between Racing Beat's and Rotary Performance's... but hopefully I'll get it done by the end of the year.

That's the setup I have - Bonez performance converter and Racing Beat muffler. It sounds slightly louder than stock and it really makes my car go zoom zoom! I'm even using the stock iron manifold. Those guys at Rotary Performance know their stuff and I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them if I were you. Of course, if I had to do it all over again, I probably would have bought the Racing Beat Streetport exhaust.
