Turn signal release

Well I decided to go in and fix my gauges yesterday, since it did not light up making it a pain to drive at night. And while pulling the steering wheel I broke this little black piece that seems to release the turn signal after you turn. Now what I cant figure out is how this thing got caught by the steering wheel in the first place.I looks like there could have been 2 protrusions to connect to the back of the steering wheel, but if they were plastic as well I think they might break easily. So I could be missing something else here. Do I just need to replace the plastic piece or was there something that went in place between the wheel and the piece to put pressure on it to make it turn (Like a washer or something) I lack a digital camera, so I am going to make some simple pictures with paint.

Yes, there are 2 nipples on the ring that insert into the back of the wheel. They are frequently broken by 1st timers during install.

Head for the wreckers and pull a steering wheel, you'll find a good one, eventually. They are a molded part of the ring.

Yeah I figured, I think I might be better off fabbing something up. Something made out of rubber that has a lot of friction I can put between the sterring wheel and the thingy.

when i swapped steering wheels in my car my blinker release went all whacky so i pulled that piece of plastic out, and now the blinkers do mostly turn off by themselves but also sometimes go on by themselves.

i guess i should put mine back in (properly) one of these days...

Ha! I still can't keep from breaking them, mostly it's due to my "telescopic" steering wheel breaking them.

Meh, by the time I get a new one I will be used to turning them off manually haha. Atlantarx7.com says they have the little plastic ring and will sell it for 10, I emailed them again asking about the 2 nipples. Hopefuly they will have some in.

You can still get that part new from the dealer. It is even cheaper than Atlantarx7.com. The cost new is about $3 or so. I replaced mine about a year ago or so since my turn signal cancel wasn't working. I will dig up the part number. If you search on my user name and use something like "turn signal cancel" as search words, you should find it. I am pretty sure I posted the part number before.

Okay, this should be the number: BA29-66-126. Give the dealer a call and see what the price and such is. I believe the part is called TURN SIGNAL CANCEL CAM. Good luck. I have found that the dealer prices on some things aren't bad. Things like this, door pulls cups, lenses, etc. can be bought new for a reasonable price sometimes. Usually these parts when used are as brittle and faded as what you are trying to replace, so I try to at least try to check with the dealer or Mazdatrix first before searching for used parts.

Hey thanks a lot dude, that will really aid in my search. I will give the dealer a call and see if I can find anything.

EDIT: Well after calling the nearest dealer (about 45 minutes away) I learned that they used the part up until 93 on various cars and it only costs 6.95 and it comes with the parts to connect to teh steering wheel. So first of all, score, and second, you are my new hero. Thanks a lot.

Cool. Glad to have helped. Looks like the price about doubled, but still quite reasonable for a new part that will fix the problem. Just be real careful putting the wheel back on so you don't break the pegs. I think the best way is to put the new part into the back of the steering wheel and slide them on together. Maybe some tape or silicone could be used to hold the part against the back of the steering wheel during the install. Also, since the dealer is pretty far from you, many will ship to you. Not sure if it is worth it or not in this case, but could save you a drive.
