Turbo guys, take a look

Not to toot my own horn but I'm pretty proud of what I finished tonight. It's a cold air intake for the turbo. After putting in my new radiator and boxing it in pretty well the air filter was seeing only hot underhood/radiator air. This caused my air intake temps to go up a ton. So this forced me to do something I've been meaning to do for a LONG time. I was going to run a hose up in front of the intercooler and put the filter on it but I had no room to snake a 4" hose past the radiator and intercooler. So some head scratching lead me to what you see here.

I thought I'd share because I've seen a lot of filters just clamped onto the compressor housing. This may be a alternative for some that don't mind cutting a 4" (or whatever your turbo inlet size is) hole in the inner fender.

BTW the plastic fender well is going to go back in to protect any road debris that might have wanted to hit the filter.

Oh yeah, sorry about the bad pic quality.... they were taken with my phone.

Very nice welding... what metal is the pipe and how did you weld it.

I did "pie cuts" for my intercooler piping, but my welds didn't turn out THAT good.

I need to get some gas for the mig so I can get some nice welds like that.

They don't have Mandrel benders in your neck of the woods?

A 4" Mandrel bend would be pretty nice too.

Looks like a lot of work. It's similar to what I have planned, except
I won't point it back up. I would leave it hanging upside down. That
way moisture won't collect in it either.
Great Work though.

^ I am not sure what type of radii he is dealing with but there is a limit on how much the pipe can be bent while still keeping the same diameter all the way through. Maybe that is why. Or there is just the fact that it is cheaper Custom bent mandrel pipes are not "cost effective".

This is partly why my IC pipe on the turbo side it pieced as well. The radius is too tight.

I have heard that gains are minimal on a turbo setup but nothing wrong with a little extra umph. Might as well get as much efficiency out of your system as possible.

Nice work setzup.

Looks good, I'm still trying to figure out a way on mine now. I miss my old cold air box badly, time to build a new on, better, stronger, bigger, muahahahah.....

rotor vs. piston- the material is actully thick walled 4" tubing. Welding with gas and a good welder makes all the difference.

Revhed- How has it been working for you?

No rotor rx7- thanks.

Directfreak- Z-beater is right, the radius is just too tight to be able to use a mandrel bend. I had a buddy that has access to just about any kind of bent tubing try and get me one but they just can't get it that tight I would have pointed it upside down but it just wasn't going to happen, the room just isn't there with the plastic inner fender in place. The only way I could make my filter fit is to stuff it in there like you see. Pointing it down might work if you have a smaller filter.
Moisture is a good point and that will have to be watched. Good thing the inner fender will block all the tire debris. I think if I get any water in there it will be due to heavy rain. Good thing I don't drive it in the rain all that much.

Z-beater- It's amazing the difference you see in air intake temps. The colder the air the better when speaking about turbo rotaries or any turbocharged engine for that matter. It's nice to try to maximize the gains wherever possible

Max7- I still remember your old filter housing you made for the black -se back in the day.... That was a good looking piece!

Yeah, I agree. So you are actually logging intake temperatures? I would be interested to know some figures if you ever get a second to post them up.

Directfreak does bring up a good point on the moisture however. I am curious as to what size filter you are running. And in Directfreaks case what he plans to run. Or anyone else that might have this setup. As we all know a longer filter is better...

I plumbed my air cleaner so that it was in the front of the car. The rad is small enough and offset to one side that it should recieve cold air that is being forced through the front.

12at- you were my inspiration!

z-beater- I have datalogs that show the air intake temps from before, haven't datalogged since the modification.

This is the filter I run http://store.summitracing.com/partde...0&autoview=sku but the picture they have on the site isn't right as you can see from my pic's.
