Trouble after rat's nest removal
New guy here....be gentle.
I just bought my third 1st-gen RX-7. The last two are dead and gone.
The new car is a tan 84 GSL in nice condition, with working air conditioning, cruise control, power windows, and a near-perfect interior.
I've been digging around several forums for a while trying to fix my problem.
I removed the rat's nest last weekend. I yanked the relays, hoses and plugged all the lines. Since doing so, the car starts hard, smokes blue smoke for the first 10 seconds after startup, misfires from idle to 2K-ish RPM until it warms up. It still misfires at idle, but does hold an idle pretty well provided it is fully warmed up.
The car was running nearly perfect prior to the removal. Started instantly, with little need for the choke (I still used it, but barely had to pull it out). It idled so quietly that I could hardly tell it's running.
Although the idle RPM is about the same (800-900 RPM), it's louder. The car seems a bit slower ( I got overtaken by some new orange Neon earlier in the week ) too.
I apologize for starting a new Rat's Nest thread. I tried to read through a tutorial for it's removal that was linked from one of the threads I read. The author mentioned a particular vacuum line that should not be plugged, or the car will smoke badly on startup. I couldn't decypher which line he was referring to.
I pulled the rat's nest because 3-4 lines were plugged or not connected, and one of the relays was broken (vacuum connectors broken clean off).
I pulled the rat's nest off my last RX-7 and it ran fine!
Does anyone have any idea how to get back my smooth running/non smoking rotary?
P.S. My cruise and air conditioning are fudged right now, but I did understand from the tutorial how to get them working again.

Nevermind. Fixed it tonight. The tutorial must have been referring to the carb bowl vent. I uncapped it and the car starts/runs way better.
Thanks (not that I got an answer either way)

Yup. Even downloaded it for repeated use!
It's an excellent read, but some of the pics are not all that helpful.
I certainly applaud your effort and your love for the RX-7. It's people like you that make a person believe that the world still contains good people.
Keep up the excellent work and thank you.
