I have an 85 gsl se with a 13 b motor, it has a five speed transmission. What year/motor cars will have a transmission that will swap out with mine? Are there any upgrade (junkyard) swaps for a stronger transmission or a transmission with better gear ratios.

 

your se has a good tranny that will hold up to 200+ hp.
if you need a replacement any 81-85 tranny will bolt right in. the 12a trannys just dont have as high 5th gear.

 

All non turbo RX-7's have pretty much the same 5 speed tranny,with only minor external changes for the shifter,mounts and small changes to gear ratio/syncros.
None are really stronger than another,hence the reason that 2nd gen trannies tend to fail more often (more power,heavier car with the same tranny)

The only tranny that will give you an appreciable difference in torque holding capacity is the TII turbo trans.Its proven itself to be very strong,even tougher than the 3rd gen's tranny.They can be fitted to the SE engine,or almost any rotary for that matter,but youll have to juggle flywheel,clutch,trans mounts and dirvelines.....along with a few custom mods to make it all work.
