Trans Issue

I've been having a problem with my trans for over a year now, and I'm so sick of it. First of all, 1982 GSL, stock 5 speed. What will happen is every time I try to put it in reverse, the gears will grind, even with the clutch fully depressed. In addition to this, when shifting up to third, I feel like I have to double pump the clutch to do it without grinding. All other gears are fine. WTF is up?

First thought is you'll need to bleed air from the clutch system.

If that doesn't fix the problem perhaps you have a bad slave or master cylinder (Change'm both at the same time).

Lastly, maybe your clutch is going bad.....shift up to 5th gear at about 35...40mph....does the rpm match mph? If the rpm's rise faster than the mph....your clutch is slipping....may need replacement.

LOL

Let's start with reverse. Reverse is a non-synchronized gear. That means if you're in neutral with your foot off the clutch, and you push the clutch in and go straight to reverse it WILL grind 90% of the time. You need to put the clutch in and put the stick in another gear (say 5th) to get the input shaft to stop spinning, then slide the stick straight into reverse. No more grind.

Hopefully your gear is still in decent enough shape!

As for 3rd, time for a new synchro. That's all there is to it. Just because the others are good, doesn't mean that one should be either. Milage, driving habits/style, materials, frequency of gear lube change, all effect the long parts live. When mine went out (3rd gear also) there would be no grind below 1/2 throttle. Yes I lift the throttle when shifting. But you get the idea. If I was say at the drag strip it would grind everytime. Casual driving no grind. Eventually it got bad enough that it scratched all the time. That's why I pulled the trans out and rebuilt it.

Of course as stated above in reference to third gear, make sure your clutch master and slave cylinders and the line are not leaking. Sometimes it's hard to see the slave leak as it will leak into the boot and subsequently into the bellhousing and trash the clutch. Bleed the system to make sure there is no air in the line. Your release point, aka when the car would start moving, should be able 1/2-3/4 of the way up from the floor.
