Tranny locked in 5th gear
Tranny locked in 5th gear
After my accident the transmission has been stuck in 5th gear. I can only move the shifter into the 5 and R gates and in neutral will not go to the left from where 5 and R are. Even when teh shifter is in reverse 5th gear is still engaged. Is there a way to fix this or in something internally broken and I need to replace the tranny? Thanks in advance for any help.
Only way to tell for sure is to pull it apart. FSM has a full manual tranny rebuild section. As cheap as trannys are, might be simpler to buy one and save your's for spare parts.

We always hope that it's a messed up shifting link on top of the gearbox, and once every hundred years it is! I actually freed a stuck gearbox once by working it, driving in the one gear that would work, abruptly accelerating/decelerating, applying sharp blows to the lever, etc. It finally came free and worked fine for at least 50k miles.
But usually it's inside the box and if it took place over time it's accompanied by a history of bearing noise usually ending in a no-go. If it happens suddenly it may be a jammed fork or syncronizer.
