I was talking with a fellow rotary guy. And he said to mix Transmission Fluid with your Motor Oil? He said that it burns cleaner, keeps the interals cleaner, etc.

Has anybody else done this or heard of it??
I've searched on this topic and I can't find anything.

 

I am sure he means doing the ATF method once in a while. If not, then NO!

 

ATF can be poured into the engine to clean it up once in a long while if there is a problem. Otherwise, some people use it as a premix (a few drops per tank) with the gas. Other than that, there is no other use for ATF in engine. ATF should not be confused with manual gearbox oil though.

ATF treatment is a last ditch effort for resurrecting an otherwise junked motor. It softens the carbon deposits that might be causing a apex seal to stick. Other than that, it burns like crap, and probably leaves more gunk temporaraly in your engine then before the treatment. Thats why its important to drive it hard after treatment, to burn off as much carbon as possible before it causes the apex seals to stick again.

I wouldn't add it to my oil anyhow..... its tranny fluid, its meant for life in tranny, not the totally different enviroment that a combustion engine is. So while it might, somehow in a some freaky sort of way burn better than the motor oil (which I doubt), it won't lubricate the bearings and seals that are just as important as the apex and side seals, etc.

 

I wouldn't add ATF to engine oil, ever. I'm currently doing an MMO treatment as a last ditch effort in an old carboned up engine. If it works, it works. If it doesn't, the MMO was cheap enough.

 

Engine Oil has a rating of 10W-50, this number is how viscous the fluid is in different temperature ranges, which vary widly inside your ENGINE! the Transmission fluid in a MANUAL gearbox is 1 grade SAE90 ( a lot thicker than engine oil)

but ATF (automatic transmission fluid) is a HYDRAULIC Fluid with lubricants added to it!!

If you wanna clean up the crud inside of your engine just mix a little MMO in the oil. It thins out the oil but if you run a thick oil like 20W50 it's just fine.

If you add a quart of ATF to a piston engine's oil and drive it about 100-200 miles, it cleans the hell out of the engine internals. You can take the valve cover off and everything will be all bright and shiny. I wouldn't advise doing that on a rotary, though. And I don't advise the ATF treatment on rotaries at all, due to the problems associated with puking ATF out into the exhaust system. There are safer alternatives that are MADE for cleaning engine internals like Amsoil "Power foam", or Techron concentrate that won't destroy your catalytic converters. I've used the power foam product for many years on both piston and rotary engines and I highly recommend it.

 

I'm sold on the power foam. I've just got to get my engine running before I can use it.
