too much fuel?

here I go again,
decided to actually attemp and get my car goin after it stopped a couple weeks ago, ao i purchased: cap, rotor, wires, and plugs. i recaped all the vacum ports out of the carb (no rats)
i intalled them and she fired right up, with electrical assistance,( this is what happened the last time, i just bought new plugs, aprox. a week before it stopped again)
i know its flooding, it smells of gas, but its also not idleing as well as id like, when i first got the engine to start, i had to ajust the idle ajust screw
the timing all the way advanced, but will run with it at about halfway between ahalf and all the way. The trailing time is right inbetween the trailing and leading timing marks on the crank ( if i move it in toward the dist. and get closer to the 0 mark for trailing it starts clicking)
ok now, the car will idle at 1k ok/ \? but then sometimes it will be really lopeing (?word?) and drop between 750 & 500, i took the car out for about a 10 minute drive after it warmed up, and when i got back it wouldnt even idle. i let it die, and tryed starting and it wouldnt, so i hooked it back up to the battery charger and it fired up and idled at about 1k so i just unplugged the fuel pump and let it burn the rest of the gas and turned it off.
My uncle is rebuildin a carb for me (tryin to figure it out first)
so what do you think the problem is, i even sprayed carb cleaner down the carb before trying it, and then after it started.
thanks, and sorry for the long post

One time after getting back from a short drive when I was tuning mine, it would not idle. When I put my finger over the hole inside the air filter housing that leads to the shutter valve, it idled just fine. Since you pulled the rats nest, have you pulled the air pump, acv valve, blocked off the different things on the intake, aluminum tapped the fittings that lead into the air filter housing and blocked off the shutter valve lines too?

*This was before I removed the emmisions stuff. After I removed it all via Pratch's howto things ran quite a bit better not to mention replacing the Nikki with another one I had laying around
