Question Tonneau / Rear Cargo Privacy Cover

Does anybody have either anecdotal or data to show how much the privacy cover affects noise levels from reverberating from the rear hatch area? I am interested in getting one to restore the car to original spec, but curious as to any other benefits it might have besides the cosmetics. Thanks!

The rear cargo shade is an extremely rare accessory. Finding one still functional would almost be an exercise in frustration. They are nearly non existent these days. To be honest, I'm not sure there would be data on noise levels as the cargo shade was really just a privacy cover, not much of a sound deadener.

Good luck. Took me 10 years to find mine. Really hides things in the back. Doesn't flap or misbehave with windows open.

Wow, that thing looks incredibly janky. No wonder they didn't sell many.

It’s honestly more of a cosmetic piece just completes the look of the fc in my opinion

Nice pics, but this is the 1st Gen forum. I'm unaware of any cargo privacy cover ever offered for the 1st Gen series,

Wow, that's a nice accessory spread! I'd love to find the cargo stopper. And the roof rack would make all the WRX vaping kids drool! Nice find.

Two covers were "available". JDM and euro markets got the factory piece, a simple tried-and-true 'reel-out' model that rolled back nicely behind (and here is the problem for US market...) the REAR seat. The Yankee Answer was the above noted confabulation of hangers and geegaws. Neither would solve sound issues. That $$ better spent maybe swapping out - or adding to - the carpet underlay in the hatch floor and behind the side panels...

Rear cargo blind was standard, not an optional accessory, on Australian s2 and s3 models. All our models were equipped with rear seat, which is the rear blind is affixed. I can grab some photos if anyone is interested. These still come up.for sale from time to time in Australia. They could be adapted to non rear seat models if affixed to a custom partition.

Here we go. These are the factory standard Mazda rear cargo covers.

Thanks, wish we had that option here I states. Always conscious of leaving possessions in view in hatch area
Some things too big to fit in bins.
These days a little lazy,if I leave something in hatch area,I pull car cover over it. Works.

Tha k you for sharing the pictures! I had no idea that the later cars had them as standard equipment overseas! All I remember was the flimsy accessory cargo shade that could be ordered for the 79 and 80 model years! That later model cargo shade is impressive! Reminds me a lot of the one on my 944!

Thought the same about German car and 944. That is a well made cover. Still amazes me after all these years how different markets had different offerings for these cars.
If I could find that style tonneau cover-in that color I would seriously consider purchasing/installing in my SE. I don’t know what it would do to original value of car,I think it wouldn’t affect it negatively.
I do weekend trips and long drives, and often have camera equipment with me,some of which can’t fit in bins. Would provide some peace of mind leaving car unattended for hours/overnight.
Out of sight, out of mind thing.

Strangely enough I bought an 80 a few months back and it had the Tonneau cover and the Louvers on it. I did not know the Tonneau cover was even a "mazda" item or even rare.

Thank you for sharing a picture of it! I would hang onto that cargo cover! I'm not sure if it's a Mazda accessory or if it's an aftermarket piece. Either way, its ultra rare and it would be nearly impossible to find another.

This is a MazdaUSA-spec cover, never offered in other Markets. Presume it was a US sub-contractor that actually made it. Is featured in Mazda US RX7 accessory brochures. Thanks for posting the pic. Have seen install pic of this piece. Looked....challenging

That said its an absolutely unique bit of RX7 kit! Nice.

Ok, so after seeing a picture of it all laid out like a bear skin rug, Stu's technical description of mounting "a confabulation of hangers and geegaws" is a little more apparent. (maybe I'm just not familiar with that Canadian dialect)

So the main rod mounts across the rear hatch area, somewhere on the inside of the B-pillars. Do both ends just screw to each side? Seems like a permanent mounting unless you like holes in your interior after removing it.

The ‘79 LE I bought a few years ago still had one installed. When I sold the car I left it installed. It was a cool addition to the car. I have owned many SA’s and FB’s but have never seen one before.

@19-r-e-d-79 long-haul question, but would you by chance still have the tonneau cover and be willing to sell it? Thanks!

I'm amazed at all the, sort of, negative comments on the cover in this thread. This cover works extremely well at hiding any cargo. It doesn't make any extra noise with the windows down at speed. It's obviously very unique and so far I've only met one other person with one on an SA and he was at DGRR a few years ago. Ironically his and mine left hand elastic for the cover that goes to the strut mount on the window both failed at that DGRR. The small pockets on the front side are also very convenient for stowing water bottles, sunglasses, and cigar accruement.

I have to attribute the comments to folks being jelly of the cover.
