tips on a Gen 1

Looked in the FAQ's but did not see this ?. The FAQ's are top notch though!!!

OK, i'm looking to buy a 1st Gen, what are the main points to look at? I know rust is a big issue(I have owned lots of old VW's) but where are the big problem areas on these cars? He told me it has some on the rear arches(thru)some other surface stuff.

What else are "typical" problems on these cars outside the normal stuff?

I'm going to look at a 82(not sure what model), it has a new Pa insp, which is good b/c Pa inspections are pretty through(unless its a lickem stickem). Says it has a new tune up. What would YOU consider a tune up?? Has a tick or 2 over 100k miles.

He is asking $1300 firm on it, which seems to be a very fair price for the description.

I'm only looking for a "fun" car, something that I can drive now and again(not a daily) and at a auto X sometimes.

Thanks guys, this looks to be a very good forum!!

The model is everything when it comes to prices on these cars. Snap a few pics if you can, interior and exterior conditon plays a big role since the cars are starting to go into collector status.

OK, just got back from looking at it. Didnt have time to drive, but started it up. Sat for some time(week?) and started right up. Idle was good.ran it for a couple mins. and shut it off. Had some smoke comeing out of the air cleaner, oil smelling. Is that normal for a 7 that has sat and not really warmed up?

Outside
Silver paint. Rust was not all that bad from what I saw. rear fenders have small holes at the bottom rear corner. Couple small dings in the body. faded paint(silver). Rims stock(thats OK) in good shape,no real rash. Tires are OK. No sunroof.

Interior
Needs door cards. Black tape on the top of the cards. Rips on the seats, covers on both. Overall other than the cards, its what I expected. Carpet is in good shape. Rear hatch shocks shot.

This is a "regular" RX-7 from what I can see. No badges to say otherwise. Rear drums, has air that does not blow cold. No sunroof( dang).

The price is $1300, down from $1500, but he wants to get rid of it. He bought it for his daughter, paid $900 for it, put over $300 for tune up and insp. Then his wife wanted her to have a car with air bags and such, so they got he a Honda.

Does this sound like a deal?? It does to me, but I am asking the experts here........

To much for what I have seen there. I have own two Rx7 the first one 1981 Mazda Rx7 GS, I got for $600 dollars. Was great never some work but nothing big and I sold it for $1,500 after all the time and work I put into it.

Now this new one I just got a 1984 Mazda Rx7 GS pretty damn good better than my old one in alot of ways. I pay $750 for this car and only needed to do minor work into it. The car even pass emission with flying colors and didn't pay that much like that guy is asking for. This car dosen't smoke on the carb or from the muffler at all. Here is a link to the thread where I have picture of it.

That should give you an idea what to shot for. If it was a GSL-SE then peoples will ask for more as they are the best model and are becoming rare to find.

im new here and coincidentally i last week just bought a 1985 gs 12a. in similar shape to the one that you looked at for $600.00 except it doesnt smoke or anything and pulls hard to 7000rpm and the interior is decent for an 85 car im happy about it, and its a blast to drive. let that guy hold onto that car for another month or two and see what he will drop to or just go over there with a grand and see if money talks.....................if not just keep looking
