Make sure the plug wires are right and make sure the distributor is mounted properly. It helps to have a second car available so you can put them side-by-side and compare.

Yeah well I'm sure we all have a second rx-7 to compare with, Get a factory manual or at least a haynes manual. Most distributor caps will have labels next to the terminals, these are usually T1, T2, L1, L2. Since the rotors spin counter clockwise its easy to remember that your leading plugs will be on the bottom. Trailing are on top, Your Foreward rotor is #1 and the rear rotor is #2. Your ignition coils are arranged in the same order #1 is foreward or leading and #2 rear is trailing. T1 = Trailing plug Rotor 1, So T1 goes On the top first plug, T2 goes on the second top plug, so T1 = Top #1 T2 = Top #2. L1 = Leading plug Rotor 1 or L1 = Lower #1 and L2 = Lower #2. Hope I didnt confuse you I'm only posting this so you can double check yourself, often timing problems can result as mistakes in plug wire placement. If your distributor does not have said marks, which it should. You need to refer to a manual or someone wiser than I.

Oh and you might want to consider this being a fuel related issue, maybe your pump is going, or it could be your fuel delievery. Just a thought....

normally the engine is timed on the front rotor, but it sounds like the dist has been taken out and put back in wrong and timing set on the rear rotor. but like a previous post said, check and make sure all the plug wires are where they're suppose to be.

Actually, in SF you should be able to find someone to compare with. I'd offer, since I'm 30 miles away, but the tags on the SE are out-of-date. There are several SE owners in SF.

The manuals are good, and you can find an online version:

I'm still looking for a good way to static-time the 7s electronic distributor.
