timing again

Just a couple questions on timing. I have read the Yaw acticle but have a little trouble doing it alone you know 4000rpm and adjust timing to their specs. Is it possible to use a timing light w/advance built into it for setting the advance at idle? what are the best settings for timing at idle?
12a pretty much stock.

It's easy. While standing over the engine with the timing light rev the motor up by hand until the timing stops advancing. That's your total ignition timing. At this stage it would help if you had three hands so you can adjust the timing but you'll be able to see how far it's off. Then just adjust it at idle and re-check the total advance till you get it spot on.

Also, using a timing light with an advance dial won't make any difference. You'll still have to rev it up to 4000rpm but it just means you don't need the extra marks on the pulley. And if you do use one you need to double whatever number you're trying to achieve. Say if you want 10* you need to dial in 20*. The reason being a rotor fires once every revolution while a piston fires every second revolution.
