Time to upgrade my 1979 Sa Alternator

I joined a while ago never posted but have been doing a lot of reading about the alternator upgrade. I found some stuff helpful and a lot more just really confusing. My car was working fine then the battery kept draining dead and I figured that if I’m going to get a new battery the Alternator is going to be replaced as well. I have read a lot about the Swapping and rewiring and still a little confused everyone is talking about bypassing the old external alternator but I haven’t been able to find any pictures or explanations on how to do it. I found a few older links but the pictures were either removed or just not working on my computer. Is there any really good explanations of the entire process from start to finish with pictures of what’s going on? I have worked on cars now and then but never did any major modifications like this before so any help would be appreciated.

Also how is the battery drain issue stopped when you do this modification? I hear people mention this but no further explanation on how to stop it from draining your battery when the car is off.
