Nice clean up job on the engine. Looks like the weather will still hold off for a while. Not quite as mild, but workable.

When do you hope to have it running??

I'm giving myself a week. My girlfriend loves the car and rode in it all last year at school in Ontario, and I want to pick her up here at the airport in it. But I'm not holding my breath... carb tuning and all that.

But with that goal in mind! Tonight: carved the primaries together on my carb spacer. Phenolic is a bitch to cut, I was going at it with files and rasps and it took my 45 mins to do this:

Then I installed the edelbrock.

And the shiniest air cleaner ever.

Then I wired up the starter and trans wiring (minimal, no cruise) and removed the old 12a RB exhaust, which I will sell soon. A good evening's work. Next:
-install oil cooler and get lines made for it
-install exhaust
-need hoses for carb and vacuum lines, and hook up throttle cable

Also my clutch might be busted. Last time I had an engine in the car it was loose, and I bled it carefully but it still seemed weak. This time it doesn't seem to build up any pressure no matter how much I pump it. I'll put my other clutch slave on and bleed it and see if that's better.

He had it running without the muffler at 11:00 pm last night finally.

I bet the neighbors joined in the celebration, or at least took notice....

She's alive! Running, but I've been busy getting a new battery and new terminals. My new clutch hydraulics arrived from Rockauto, and I need to bleed the brakes. Muffler is on but the connecting piece the muffler shop gave me was too long. Will keep updating!

GENTLEMEN: IT IS TIME. THE SHIFTER IS INSTALLED AND I AM ABOUT TO GO FOR THE FIRST DRIVE

Just swapped metering rods to the thickest, because I think I'm running hella rich

It helps balance the rotor pulses to provide better idle and throttle response

Vacuum leak somewhere. It won't idle anywhere under 2000. On the other hand, it's got enough power that I can't drive it on these snowy roads without constantly spinning tires!
Mother Nature saw the blue exhaust and said, "Give me lots of snow and -20 for a week! This monstrosity must be stopped!" So I doubt I'll be driving it much this week.

Good things:
+Clutch seems to work well
+brakes seem to work well
+seems to be lots of power!
+car still warms up inside very quickly

Bad:
-Vacuum leak!
-I poured some snowmobile two-stroke oil into the gas tank, which only has about 10 liters or so in it, and I'm concerned it may not be a good mix. Need to visit gas station very soon.
-Not sure how much fluid is in tranny still, need to change tranny oil. Nasty job to do in -20.

Possible sources for vacuum leak:
-Intake mani. The RB intake overlaps the side inspection plate, so when I installed it I cranked the bolts tight but there may be a gap there still.
-Between carb and gasket (above spacer): I cut a corner off the gasket so I could sandwich the throttle cable bracket between the carb and spacer. Maybe the bracket is thick enough it's holding the carb and gasket apart a little.
-I connected the PCV valve vacuum port to the tube that runs to the charcoal canister, maybe this is the wrong connection.

Didn't do a very thorough job yesterday of WD40 around the carb etc while running to look for leaks; I'll do a better job when I get the chance.

Rxtasy I connected the primaries. 84stock finds it smooths out the idle. Secondaries obviously can stay, they have nothing to do with the idle

Update

Thanks to help from 84stock the timing is right on and she purrs. Can't quite get idle below 1000 yet.

Throttle cable bracket is on and working for now, though I don't quite get WOT. That's to be adjusted later though. Main issue is that I got my header glowing red last night. I see that's either from timing off, too rich, or too lean. My timing is pretty bang-on from the static timing method, but I'll try advancing it a little. I'm using the largest metering rods right now (ie. smallest amount of fuel) so maybe I better step that up. Still need to adjust the choke, and figure out what is draining my battery so badly.

Play safe, start rich and then go lean. Never the other way!

Thanks to 84stock I got my timing bang on and idles nicely down at about 1000. Vac leak was from the dizzy advance - who knew, the vac advance for a V8 just doesn't really work with our little distributors? Exhaust no longer glowing and time to take it for a drive last night -

AND MY BRAKES ARE GONE. Damn, I bled them last week and they felt great! Where did my brakes go?

Fluid leaking from down the front of the booster from the master cyl, but that's been there a tiny bit for a long time. I don't know if that's the issue, about to poke my head underneath the car and see if there's a loose hose somewhere. Why the hell does this have to come out now!!!

Brakes are done. New master cyl installed, brakes bled and took her for a real test drive today! LOTS more power, lots of fun, and the exhaust I got from 84stock sounds really mean.
Wired in the choke and did the first adjustment - ie. got engine warmed up and turned choke to just before it moved, so proper operating temp will have the choke full open. Haven't tried a total cold start yet.

On the back of the alt I found that I had forgotten to plug in the plastic connection; I only had the ring to the battery. Hopefully my battery won't slowly drain anymore, I did the poor man's test to see if there is any drain on the batter and I don't think there is.

IDLE: My idle dials in at about 1200 rpm with the screws about 1.5 turns out. I think it will get lower when I adjust the pedal throw (not quite getting to WOT yet anyway). At this setting now it purrs, missing a beat once every 10 seconds or so. However, when I rev the engine up and let off the gas for it to bring itself back down, it nearly dies: drops to about 700/800 and hunts there for a while before I bring it back up to 1200. BUT when I brought the idle screws out to 2 or 2.5 turns out, so that it comes back to a solid 1200, the idle is lumpy. Not sure how to proceed on this one right now.

Back from the dead! I daily'd through the winter -really- with studded tires, and dealt with minor issues as I went. Never could get a solid idle under about 1100. Come summer I got too busy with work to replace the front brakes shocks and bearings, so here I am in -10 c weather finishing up since I got a job which gives me more time! New rotors, calipers, ss brake lines, bearings and shocks so I just need an alignment and then I'll be back to endlessly fiddling with the carb.

Here's some pics just to show how dumb it is working outside in this weather.
