Throttle sensor

What is the purpose of the throttle sensor (on the carb)? The Haynes manual covers the adjustment of it, but never says what it does exactly. Thanks.

Its part of the elabarate deaccleration system to avoid unnecessary fuel dumped thru the
engine upon bakcing off the throttle, tied in with shutter/coasting valve and all the other emmision crap on our rx's. rx7doctor
