Testing car in need of fuel pump

Hey guys, did a quick search with no results that i was lookin for, if i missed it point me in that direction.

There's a guy in my area selling an '82 which seems to be in good condition. He claims it only needs a fuel pump. Is there anyway to somehow start it without this?

I know to go through the rigamarole of seeing if theres any compression, and spark, rust, and the other mechanical shinanigans but if he is claiming it ONLY needs a new pump itd be sweet to see if it did indeed run.

Thanks again in advance.

If you have a spare stock fuel pump, take it with you and swap it. Take a multimeter too and check for power at the pump, no power, check the engine fuse. Don't recall if it's a 15 or 20 amp, take spares along too.

Since this is a 82 the fuel pump should come on when you turn the key to the on position.

If you hear it come on then verify that fuel is getting to the carb. All you have to do is pull off the feed line and hold it in a metal can.

If you don't hear the fuel pump come on then check the fuse. If that is good then proceed with the next step.

Spray starting fluid into the throat of the carb. If it only needs a fuel pump to run then it should start then die.

I could tell you how I made a "manual" fuel pump, but it is quite redneck. Worked though.

Just dribble a little gas into the primary barrels of the carb, then crank it over. This should be enough to get it running for a minute or so.
