test drove 85 gsl
Hey guys,
I have a 90 GXL, and am looking to get a first gen too, anyway I test drove an 85 gsl yesterday and something was very wrong with it..tell me what you think. It had the 3 speed auto with OD and a carb'd 12ASo anyway it handled like a dream but it's acceleration was like glue. Took over a minute to get to 60. 0 - 20 took like 30 seconds. It's top end acceleration was a little better with OD off but with OD on it ouldn't get beyond 3K RPM. WTF? also it's idle was only 400 RPM and felt lumpy. with it in neutral It wouldn't even get up to 6000 rpm. other than that it was in awesome shape, almost mint interior and great paint and only 53K miles. What do you think is wrong with it?
Oh yeah the guy thinks he can get around $3,000 for it because of the low miles!

Sounds like a real problem. Maybe old fuel, or needs a new fuel filter. $3K is way more than I would pay for that car, even with the low miles, especially being an auto. Low mileage can be a serious problem. Too much baby driving and they carbon up and have some problems. I would say start with a compression check, if that comes back good, then maybe consider it for a lower price? Also, be willing to work on the carb, as it may need to be rebuilt. It also could be that the secondaries are stuck. Then again, my car would accelerate faster than that with just the primaries...Anyway, compression first of all. Then, if you really want it, maybe try bringing the price down a little? Its your money, but thats just more than its worth if you ask me, especially due to the fact it has problems. 0-60 on my stock 85 GSL 12A with a 5 speed with 215K miles on it is about 10 seconds. Just to give you an idea how much this one is lacking...

I bought a nice 85GSL with 49k this summer for $1700. But I think that was a very good price. Paints a little dull, and LF fender damage, but mechanicals good and rest of body straight. No dings. $3000 sounds high, and the poor performance is worrisome.

yeah, I'm not going to buy this one, I was mostly just wondering what is wrong with it to drive the way it did. First I have to get my 90 back on the road, maybe next month. Anyway I love the fit and feel on teh first gen rex they are just bad ***, wish I could find one that works right for the right price. thanks for your info though
