terrible noises from under the hood

picked up an 85 gsl a couple of weeks ago, it runs ok, has a vacuum leak b/c the person who owned it before tired to remove the rats nest but didn't really know what they were doing.... anyways this weekend I started it up and after a couple of minutes it sounded like a semi was slamming on its brakes, unfortunately it was coming from under the hood of my car. had it towed to a garage but they haven't been in all weekend. the car runs fine for a minute or two before making a screeching noise and dieing, wonder if anyone had any specific ideas, beyond "you need to rebuid it". Thanks

As said by Kenetsu sounds like a belt, to add check you don't have a seized pulley on an accessory like A/C or Power Steering. remove the belts and turn the pulleys by hand, check the belts for heat damage.

no, it wasn't as high pitched as a belt, but that was the first thing i checked, all the pulleys can be moved by hand and none of the belts look damaged or in bad shap at all. also it isn't constant, it's only after a few minutes of it running then it dies after about 10 seconds of the sound.

Other possibilities to check: fan blades hitting the radiator; water pump bearings bad

Alternator bearings will sound terrible when they go too.
