temperature issues related to modifications?

greetings,

i am wondering if members here who modified their stock vehicles noticed any temperature changes during driving.

a while back, i replaced my exhaust with the racing beat performance system for a 12a. i removed the things the instructions called for and blocked off the openings the instructions called for. granted in montreal, it was bloody hot and humid (approx. 45C with the humidity), but today was the first time the temp. guage crept just over the half way point. prior to this the car never went over the half -close sometimes but never. i haven't replace the thermostat nor can i find a paper trail that would suggest it has ever been replaced.

have others here, noticed any differences with regard to temperature? or might it simply have been a case of the outside air being too hot to help cool the engine properly? other than running dry of oil, my greatest fear is overheating the engine.

thanks,
norman ng

actually, in theory, your engine temperature shouldn't change with just an exhaust system - all you're doing is just freeing up energy that would have normally gotten transformed to thermal energy instead of mechanical energy (the backpressure thing) - if you've messed with carburetion or timing, though ... then they will cause temp changes.

anyway ... check the cooling system (thermostat, lower radiator hose, water pump, belts) check the overflow tube for blockage, check the o/f bottle for level, and check for coolant leaks.

are you running straight water or antifreeze mix?

from what you said, it doesn't sound like it made a deadly dive for the red zone, so it may just be the conditions that provoked it. do you normally drive fairly hard?

at any rate, you want to keep an eye on it, and like i said, check the cooling system. just in case you're lucky enough to be getting a warning that something's about to crap out - jump on it before it gets ugly.

On a side note,

If your engine is "breathing better" via the new exhaust, you actually might be running leaner - which can lead to higher EGT's. I usually re-jet My Sea-Doo after different mods, so this is where I pulled it out of my @$$..

Just for your own good, make sure you're not running lean.

lean...lean would mean the spark plugs would have black residue on them...? also another member here mentioned that long periods of driving while lean would result in glowing header...? what would be other signs?

thanks,
