I personaly dont like the look and it adds weight and wind resistance for little reason, IMHO.

I would say Targa all the way.... but I don't use the targa at all, and so it defeats the purpose entirely to have it. As far as weight is concerned, it doesn't add that much at all. If you like looking at the clouds in the sky, and the stars at night, then go Targa. I personally would have just as soon bought two non targas as I would have both the two targas I own.

Depends on the colour of the car, and personal preference... You should really make your own decision, but if you have the targa on already might as well leave it.

Hey Glitch. its a silver colored band across the roof. Not like the semi convertible 911 etc. No opening just a band.

haha I thought he was talking about the targa top in general, not the silver band. Yeah, ditch the silver band. My '83 has it, and its not all that. Just make it look worse if its not in good shape.

I had never seen one in Australia until I came here and fell across my 81, with the stupid band.

As far as doing an old school dress up with the Mazda options, the targa band looks good. If you want to go all out, find the hatch louvers, 1/4 glass louvers and the 3 piece spoiler. Add to that the side skirts and one of the front air dams, a 7 can look pretty sharp, adding less than 50 lbs, total to the car.

Targa bands on good to vgc shape can bring decent money on eBay.

Mines an '81 and the band weighs so little I doubt it would affect performance. I like it simply because I think it adds a little bit of a more nostagic 80's look. But hey to each their own

fits some cars and looks good, but whats the point of having a targa band when the car isnt a targa? doesnt that clasify as rice, factory rice at that? as in its claiming to be something it isnt with badges and bolt on's...

hmm.

My two Rx7s both have targa bands. The thread heading should read "targa band or no targa band" because except for very limited customized few they are no real real targa gen 1 Rx7s out there. Again some my not like the look, but there aren't that many stock mazda targa band rx7s out there and even less of the aftermarket "targa7" bands eventhough there appears to be more of them in different areas. Everyone might be forgeting something which is that all models and variations of the first generation Rx7s are dropping in numbers. So here's the equation for everyone one car, one engine the rotary 12A(rare turbo model included) or limited 6 port 13B, will equal big bucks down the line in value. Of couse the 12A turbo, GSL-SE, and 78'/79' SAs will be at the top These factory models with extras are all going to equal more value and by the way the targa bands do look nice when they are in good shape. And also the 400hp TII FBs monsters won't be worth crap except maybe sentimental value and pride (sorry), only to certain buyers that are looking for something like that will pay extra for them. Collectors will seek all stock or modestly modified Rx7s only when the value of the gen 1s shoots up.

Go to any car show, there are custom sections and stock sections. Stock models for vintage cars, that are in great condition, are always worth two to three times more than custom cars.

I knew that'd bite me in the ****, lol, they're actually heavier than you think and they are located at the worst possible place to add extra weight, I didn't weight the three pieces but I'd guess between 5-10 lbs. But that is only if you are seeking serious performance such as a race car, otherwise it is a matter of choice.

I think that targa seven band looks sweet on your Rx7 because the off the dark exterior your Rx7 has. If you decide to to remove the band let me know and I'll buy it from you.

Yeah, I know its not a true targa. But if I leave my moon roof in, then I am close enough as far as I am concerned. And AussiMG I dont care that you dont like it, its just a preferance like everything else. If I was really concerned about weight, I wouldnt have it. But in terms of street performance, you would never notice the extra weight. And if I was concerned with what every one thought of my car, then I wouldnt have a 7. I dont neccesarily beleive in rice, unless it is a person that claims to have things they dont, have no idea what they are talking about, or rebadge they're cars with badges from other manufacturers. As far as I am concerned if your car looks good to you, and it is well done then its not rice.

I have talked to alot of people who have hideous cars. But they like them, and although I dont like the decal sets, or the sponser crap, or the wings... If it was done well, you cant really call it rice

And one more thing, all of our cars are rice. Rice is a generic term invented by americans and muscle car lovers who hate import cars. Rice was inspired by the fact that it is served with most chinese and japanese dishes, and the fact they have rice fields (Or whatever they are called..) So it is pretty stupid to use a term that applies to your car as well. I just try not to use it, unless I am talking to a group who wont completely understand any other term..... Yes my car really isnt a Targa, I never claimed it was. Does the band look good, I think so. Is it well done? do you really need to ask that?

Not trying to step on anyones toes.... just letting you know my thoughts....
And tornado silver mettalic is the only color I have seen that can pull off the targa band in my opinion. None of my other 7's will have a targa band, one is enough.

I disagree you can make a targa band look good on any color Rx7, LokiRx7.1 . Here's two good looking ones with the bands.

I like the targa bands; moreover, the targa bands are original "bling" before there was such a "bling"-term was invented. Although, a targa band would not look proper on mine as I have no sunroof, the first gen photos in this thread look pretty darn classy with their targa-bands and sunroofs; sorta like jewelry I suppose.
Unless you are a serious racer, I'd keep the targa-bands intact!!! They add alot.

I say keep it. It looks good on your car, and if you take it off, you may just get to find out how much the paint has faded in the past 20 some odd years.
