Supra N/A and New Accord V6 have almost the same engine!

i know this should be in another forum but oh well........

i was messing around online and i was looking up specs for different cars. i looked up the new v6 240hp accord and i reconized the bore and stroke from a supra engine...so i pulled up the n/a supra specs and sure enough, they are VERY close to each other...

2003 Accord V6 VTEC 1998 Supra

displacement 3L 3L
cylinders 6 6
borexstroke 3.39x3.39 3.39x3.39
comp.ratio 10 10
valves 24 24
fuel induction MFI EFI
valve train SOHC DOHC

HP 240@6450rpm 225@6000rpm
Torque 212@5000rpm 220@4000rpm

as you can see the 2 engines are very similar and put out similar power & torque ratings....kinda weird that a sports car and a family sedan have almost the same engine

The Accord has a V6.

The Supra has an inline 6.

Not similar at all.

i know the accord weighs more i was just talking about the engine. yea the configuration is different but the bore, stroke, cr, #valves, and displacement are the same and the power ratings are pretty close. i would say that is similar

Inline engines have all the cylinders (you guessed it!) in line with each other.
V has them in a sort of V shape =)

The configuration of the V engine allows you to put the center of mass of the engine closer to the middle of the car (since it is shorter), allowing for better handling (i think they call this front-midship?)... Also, I would guess that the shorter shaft in the V engine means less bending and twisting, yielding less power loss to the wheels (but this is probably very insignificant).

so the 2 engines ARE pretty similar aside from cylinder positioning. the main advantages of the supras engine are the electronic fuel injection and the dual overhead cams.

In 1998(like he posted) the Supra had a V6. The older Supras did have a L6, but once they switched to the newest body style(in 1993), from then on they all had V6's.

1982-1986 (Mk2) - 5M-GE (2.8L, N/A, I6)

1986.5-1989 (Mk3) - 7M-GE (3.0L, N/A, I6), 7M-GTE (3.0L, CT26 Turbo, I6)

1989.5-1992 (Mk3.5) - 1JZ-GE (3.0L, N/A, I6), 1JZ-GTE (3.0L, CT26 Turbo, I6), 1JZ-GTTE (3.0L, twin turbo, I6)

1993-1998 (Mk4) - 2JZ-GE (3.0L, N/A, VVTL-i, I6), 2JZ-GTTE (3.0L, twin turbo, VVTL-i, I6)

Part of the entire Supra lineage is that they ALWAYS had Inline 6's in them.

You're thinking of the Datsun/Nissan Z cars... the 240-280Z's and 280ZX's all had inline 6's, but starting with the 300ZX, they went to a V6 engine arrangement... oh, another trait of the inline 6 is that it runs much smoother than a V6.. something about the timing of the cylinder firing and the harmonics of an inline 6 crankshaft...

Didn't mean to come across as a dick, but I used to have an 85 Supra P-Type... I sorta knew what I had under the hood.... considering it took 3 different swaps before I was content with it, and sold it.

I like the P-Type Supra, it's got decent power and is a good looking car, but it just doesn't compare to the light and nimble handling of my '79. Of course, my '79 isn't hauling around more than 3000 pounds of car...

My buddy who owns an '82 Supra with a high compression Cressida motor took my '79 on a spin through the autoX course last Sunday and was blown away at the handling.
