silverrocket, every you said ive done and for dumbshit when i was younger but now that i think back it was really dumb and i could have gotten my head blown off but now its different

I don't want to seem like I'm preaching too much... I know that in such situations, things happen very quickly and there's little time to debate it over in your head. Maybe you do what you think needs to be done, maybe you panic and don't know what to do. Either way, it's shame that it arises in the first place.

I'm not indicating that I think there's some easy solution to the problem, just that the comments of "shoot the fuckers, ask questions later" might not be the ideal theoretical approach.

I'm sure that when actually faced with the situation, and in a place where other people likely have guns, etc, the circumstances could be different than what I'm thinking about in the comfort of my comfy chair right now.

There's no 'reset' button like on all those crappy first-person-shooter games. They're dead. Ever seen someone shot? Want to know how much counselling you have to go through after getting some 17 year old's brains all over you because you blew his head apart?

mar3 01-08-03 01:49 AM

My probation conditions won't permit me to answer that honestly...

zookeeper 01-08-03 02:06 AM

Well... if someone bangs on your car window and invites you out to fight and you get out - you are a fool. You could be crippled or killed. If you get out and cripple or kill your antagonist - you will got to jail. Fact! Judge will say you should not have gotten out of the car. If you shoot somebody "for banging on your window" - you will go to jail. And you'll have to live with what you did for the rest of your life.

Having said that, let me say that the guy who killed the 300lb Samoan who was proceeding to beat his brains out did exactly the right thing and probably did the rest of us a favor. I would have done exactly the same thing. If I didn't, that person might kill me and then go and kill somebody else.

I am not a friggin pascifist, and I am not a friggin pussy. I carry a weapon and do not care what laws that act does or does not violate. "Better to be judged by twelve than to be carried by six." Nor do I worry about Confusious and any friggin rivers. Survival is the highest law.

The fact that the rest of the western world is so full of pacifists is the reason that the United States of freaking America is the one that has to go out to kick ass and take names in the Mid-East. As in the case of the Samoan, we are doing the rest of the world a favor. If we left it up to the pascifist countries - we'd all be wearing pampers on our heads and reading Koran. DON'T get me started...

I drive a truck and Texas DPS (highway patrol to the rest of you) told me a ball-peen hammer was a most excellent and legal weapon to carry. And for self-protection, you can't beat a good cellphone.

Remember the truck driver that was drug out of his tractor in Los Angeles during the riots and almost beaten to death? That would not and will not happen to me. There would have been bodies all around that truck - many with holes, some with tread marks.

Manntis - if that 17 year old was trying to kill me, there would be no counselling needed. Only a dry cleaning bill.

I personally have ran red lights over shit like this. Its just not worth it if you ask me. But, if it came right down to it, Id fight it till the end if I had to. Ill avoid it at all costs, but as I said, if it came down to it...

BTW - I was walking to the cafeteria one time my jr year in HS and 4 guys jumped me. One walked in front of me and asked what time it was. I lifted my wrist to look at my watch and a pair of handcuffs snapped on rather quickly. 3 other guys closed in rather fast. Unfortunatly for them I have taken a total of 5 years of various martial arts, and have also had a few street fights myself. It was interesting to watch the 4 of them lay on the ground bleeding while my puny 5'5" 125 pound ass stood there (barely) with handcuffs hanging off one wrist. The unfortunate part for me was the trip to the ER for the massive concussion I recieved from a "few blows to the head" and the massive blood I lost out a few places that werent meant to bleed. Anyway, the point was I fought because I had to in self defense and saw no other way out of it. On a good note, since it happened right in the middle of the courtyard out front the cafeteria 90% of the school saw it all. No one will fuck with me or my friends to this day, and I dont even go there anymore :).

The 17 year old in question shot the guy 2 steps ahead of me out of the back of the APC. And I received counselling after all such incidences. It's required, to minimize post-traumatic stress disorder.

Theories and macho posturing are great. After you have blood on your hands, then talk about how cool it is to carry a gun.

SoRRoW 01-08-03 03:26 AM

Bahaha ...

When the guy pulled up and he had his friends in the car,He was probally boosted by his friends..Fuck carring a gun ..them days are over for me ..

I took one from a 38 slug,so did my friend ..wrong place wrong time..I got robbed by a 357 on my side for a Gucci chain like 6 yrs ago.

This sounds lame but...cary a nice big can mace in the car, roll down the window spray him ..get out spray his friends ..and then beat the shit out of them ..and leave like nothing happen,No one fights fair anymore..and im not going to sit there and fight 4 guys straight up unless I had to.One thing I dont play with is others on the road,I dont cut people off, I dont race in traffic, and I dont like people who do it to me,especially when I got my kids with me..Ill get out and beat some ones ass.

Even though I dont carry mace..My 2 fot long Macto 1/2 in drive wratchet is a nice beating peice, hey do it with class :D

SoRRoW 01-08-03 04:50 AM

Why let some one that close to you so you can use a stun gun...

(You touch me first then I hit you) lol

Directfreak 01-08-03 08:32 AM

I wonder what Snake eyes did to get 4 guys that pissed off at him.

No, I don't think a Gun is the solution. Especially if you think a Gun means you automatically win. I have Glock with me 24/7, and I am so used to it, that it's not "Courage in a Holster" for me, like it is many other dumb ass P.O.'s

Snake Eyes should have screeched on out of there, period.

If it escalated and he got taken out of the car, self defense is 100% acceptable. Non-Deadly uses of force should always be tried first. A Can of Pepper spray is always in my wife's purse, as it isn't deadly, and should give her enough time to react and flee for safety.

An ASP Baton is also within my reach most of the time, in case a quick and suprising blow is required on someone. - I used this in the department several times, especially towards the "I ain't going to jail without a fight" kind of guys. Sometimes the pepper-spray didn't work when they were high.

If my life were threatened on the street, to the point that my life, or physical well being is in danger, then goodbye asshole. See you in Hell.

Manntis, - the description you gave about the 17 year old is about an accidental discharge, and wasn't intended. He accidentally took someone's life. Of course taking someones life so graphically and horribly will affect you, especially if it was not intended.

In Desert Storm, I personally blew 5 tanks up, at 4 Iraqui's a piece inside. I later had the chance to see their charred and disgusting flesh inside. - And I sleep like a Baby.

"Fuck me? --- No... FUCK YOU!!" is my attitude for anyone who would want to hurt me, my family, or my friends.

Walk softly,....and carry a Big Stick.

pratch 01-08-03 08:57 AM

I only have a few brief words to say on this subject - watch the movie Bowling for Columbine, then actually think about it.

The US has the largest gun fatality rate of ANY country in the world and not by a small margin. It's not the gun possession, it's not our history - it's the fear sown by others.

Kids and their hormones will change. If someone wants to start a fight over your passing them - ignore them and walk away. Trust me when I say that my 5'10 185 pound frame can handle fights, but I'd much rather walk away from the hassle. It is never worth it.

timmya2 01-08-03 09:01 AM

how about a BB gun..

my glock 18 goes through GLASS

[You misunderstand. It wasn't a negligent discharge, it was a militia ambush firing on us and I fired back. Self defense, justifiable, military mandate, etc.

And six years later I still see his face.

No disrespect to you, Alex, but I had a few such incidents in the six month tour and I suspect that CQB, when you see your bullets impacting and hear their gurgled shock as they realize they're dying, is different from blowing up a machine, even if you did see charred bodies afterwords.

I believe driving away was the absolute best thing to do. I've defused a couple of angry people, and possibly saved my ass, by leaving.

Also, this crap should be in The Lounge, so let's all get back to talking about cars!

HadaGSL-SE 01-08-03 11:40 AM

some assholes pulled a knife on me and my freinds in a mcdonalds parking lot because we looked at his car wrong (a riced out golf) i just bolted to my car (a gls-se) and got the flying fuck out of there. he tried to chases us but after he almost lost it around a turn gave up
now i carry a bat ball and glove in my car at all times

Sorry - I just get tired of all the macho "If I were there I'd have blown him away" stuff. But I'm glad this isn't in the lounge or it'd turn into a bonfire of flames.

Reminds me of the joke where a State Trooper pulls a kid over for speeding. He walks up to the window and, when the kid rolls it down, cracks him hard in the shoulder with his baton. "License and Registration", he says. The kid is so shocked at being hit he scrambles to comply. The trooper looks over the info as he walks around to the passenger side. The passenger rolls down his window, and the trooper gives him a taste of the baton as well.

"What the fuck was that for?" complains the passenger.

"I just made your wish come true."

"What wish?"

The trooper grins. "Two miles down the highway, you'd have turned to your friend here and said 'I wish he'd tried that shit on me'".

Wankelguy 01-08-03 11:57 AM

Well, as someone who HAS used a gun to defend myself (twice, no less) I feel I must respond.
First, let me say that if I'd had a pepper spray canister I would have used that first. I did subsequently purchase a pepper spray can called the "Alaskan Magnum", which is for protection against grizzly bear attacks. It looks like a little fire extinguisher with a little handle and trigger rather than just a pushbutton. It shoots a wide spray pattern (more like a friggin' cloud) up to 15-20 feet. Any further than that and the cops are going to say that you weren't really in peril. I had occasion to use the pepper spray a couple of months ago when a drunk yuppie in an Acura almost ran into me in my old pickup. All I did to provoke him was look his way, no finger, nothing. So the guy starts screaming at me out his window, saying he is going to kill me. I turned off, and went into the bank parking lot. As I was getting out of the car, the guy came flying into the parking lot with his car, and he pulls up right next to me, screaming threats as he is throwing off his seat belt. About the time he grabs the door handle to get out, I let him have a good burst of the "Alaskan Magnum". The cloud just practically filled up his car, and he immediately hit the floor choking and blowing snot all over. Most effective.
I got back in the car and left without saying a word to him. A couple of days later, I'm driving down the street when guess who drives by? Yup, you guessed it, it's the guy in the Acura. I looked right at him and he wouldn't make eye contact, so I suppose he learned his lesson.
What he didn't know is that I am the President of a gun club here in Oregon, and have a concealed weapons permit, as well as being an excellent marksman. You don't know how you are going to react until you are put in the situation of having to draw your weapon. I've been there twice, and both times were pretty hairy situations. For those that are wondering, no, I didn't end up having to shoot anyone either time, although the last time I did put a shot into the ground between the cranked-out punk's feet when he advanced toward me and my wife after failing to heed my command to stop. And yes, I was arrested for discharging a firearm in the city limits, although that charge was later dropped after I spoke with the city prosecutor.
When I told him what had happened, he couldn't believe that I didn't just shoot the guy, and complimented me on my restraint. The fact is, I don't WANT to have to shoot anyone, if I do though, I'll kill them for sure instead of just "makin' 'em dance".
As for carrying a knife for protection, what a bad idea. Have you ever seen a knife fight? I have, and it's way more violent than anything you could imagine. It's not like one guy stabs another and that's it. The blood is flying, the people are slashing at each other, very gruesome. And a BB gun? That'll get you shot with a REAL gun, and the cops won't care that it's a BB gun.
The sad fact is that we live in a violent world, and no matter how hard you try to avoid "situations", they will find you. I've been stabbed AND shot at in the past, and it's no damn fun, let me tell you. My philosophy is that I'd rather be judged by twelve than carried by six. To wind this up, the best defense is avoiding situations entirely, but when that is impossible, I recommend the "Alaskan Magnum" as the best first defense option for most people. Peace. -WG
