stripped down carb w/ high idle
a friend of mine just picked up a 81 gsl. he is going to use the engine and trans in another car, but we are trying to get the engine running smooth first. the previous owner went a little overboard with the emission removal, and the engine is idling at 2000 rpm and we can not find any vac leaks. everything vac related has been removed or plugged. we are going to the junkyard to grab carb parts. what should we get? things i know we might need:
-the black round thing the vac seconarys connect to, and the selenoid
-the vac selenoid on the carb with the orange plug. the plug is missing too. do 81's have this?
-the electric actuator thing that triggers the omp
there is so much stuff missing. i cant believe this thing runs!!

You need to do a little reading before your junkyard run.
The car does not need thing vac related to run smooth.
Try http://www.sterlingmetalworks.com/ trouble shooting section for two big internal leaks
download the carb manual and learn the names of the parts
There is not a "electric actuator thing that triggers the omp"

the electric thing is some kind of switch that makes contact to the lever that connects to the omp. its on the front of my 85's carb, but missing from the 81's carb. anyone know what that is?
what is the vac selinoid on the passenger side of the carb with the orange plug, and do 81's have it? on the routing diagram on the hood its called the MAC V S.

The TPS? You do not need it. You should be able to completely strip a carb of all electronics and have it idle at 800 and drive just fine. Emissions are not needed. My guess is something is jamming the cams such as the accelerator pump arm? It jams on the shutter valve sometimes and the fast idle rod could be bent. Check your main throttle stop screw on the back side of the carb. Clockwise raises idle, counter lowers.
If its not a jam... You could have a clogged jet. Does it stumble and stutter below 2000? I bet it has a clog. Pull the carb top off, pull the jets out and blow them out with carb cleaner. You should be able to spot the clog by holding it up to the light and peeking through the hole.
If you do need parts I have tons... I have 3 broken down Nikkis in a big box I'd sell for like $50.
Does the car have trouble starting? Does it pop and backfire?
