Streetport / Carb / HP vs. Price question

In the TII swap thread DirectFreak mentions that one could "Take your (12A) engine, rebuild it, Streetport it, get some nice headers and a good carb (Weber/Dellorto) and you’ll be at about 200 hp for less than $1200"

I can't figure out how this works out for that cheap. Anyone care to help me out? (I can barely find a 45 DCOE carb for half that, let alone including the rebuild and porting)

Also, RotaryResurrection seems to only rebuild 13B blocks..... Does he do 12As as well?

I say this all because I've got a spare 12A engine, and when my current one dies I'd like to swap in the spare and then have my current one rebuilt and do something to the tune of 200HP (particularly if I could approach that at the wheels), but preferably without a turbo.

Thanks guys :-)

Rebuild and port the engine yourself.

if you find used parts at a steal then it might be possible. I doubt it though. I dont know where DF got his figures, mabey he could explain them for us, cuz I'm kinda curious myself. I gotta really start in on my drag car soon.

DF was talking about just getting a gasket kit, reuse the rest of the seals. $125

Ah, so to take a working 12A and put a carb on it, etc.

I see that now.

A Weber would go to 200HP with just a street port and headers?

You forgot fuel pump and regulator, and the double sleeve alternaor pulley due to removing the air pump. Throw new belts with that.

Okay, add $150 max for pump and regulator. You don't need the double alt pulley, use a 3L220 belt.

yea that's new prices too. You can get all that stuff used and find someone to borrow templates from. then have extra money for new seals. I recently got a set of new apex seals for half price on ebay.
100-120 for a header
500 for used weber ida set-up(with manifold) or even less for idf or dcoe setup.
It's just depends what you want your car to be and abilities you have. Spend wisely.

I got my holley intake manifold for 140, bought a holley 600 for 100, rebuild and modified the holley for another 100, and a good deal on a holley blue w/ an fpr for 65.

So for intake and fuel that is 140+100+100+65=305

Exhaust - used rb header was 120, straight pipe to magnaflow muffler 200, so 320 for exhaust.

So i am up to 625 prior to a rebuild and port job, it is definetely do-able. You just need to do some searching around, with some good luck things turn out pretty cheap. I am stuck between going turbo or porting right now though, I guess i'll do both.

140+100+100+65 = 405 :-)

320+405 = 725

Not bad at all. (Though I think I'd go Weber, just 'cause they look cooler )

So it sounds like it's definitely worth it to go the port and carb direction before spending all the cash to modify my '81 and do a TII setup.

Edit:
Also, no one answered.... Do we know if RotaryResurrection does 12A rebuilds?
(I'd rather not call and ask until I'm actually ready to do this-- I'm kinda hoping he'll just happen to see this thread and respond )
