Between 10-20% more power than you currently have, and it continues even with mods.

i did one recently on a extra housing i had - its basicly just enlarging the stock port with a porting tool - it does however require a total tear down of the engine to do-which means new gaskets -just like when you port the head on a regular piston engine.the main problem is you have to remove the engine to do it-the best thing to do is buy an engine from a junkyard that is supposedly running, tear it down, then send the housings to a reputable tuning shop and have them do it, it is definitly worth the work though- and should be much more cost effective then a small turbo, oh by the way -if you add say a 75 shot of nitrous on top of a street port and new intake/exhaust- youre looking at 250-possibly if done right 290 hp.
also i soon hope to be porting housings so i'll let you know when i get tooled up.

I want to do a streetport. You think i could do the whole thing in a week from pulling the engine to mounting it back in?

A few days if you have all the parts you need. But if it is your first rebuild then I would say give yourself at least a week, just to be safe.

Newbie question ahead...

How can you tell if your engine has been ported? Do you have to take the housings apart to tell?

Mine sounds rough at idle like its bearly keeping it alive. Even though I had a tune up lately, although not from a performance RX-7 shop. Like V8's sound when they are running modified cam shafts.

Probably just a vacuum leak. Is your car modified in any other way?

Did it start sounding like that after you got it back from the shop? Maybe they bridgeported it when it was in for the tuneup...

haha - you have to take the rotary apart to know for sure - but there is no way they would port it on just a tune-up, as they wouldve had the whole engine apart to do it, rotary ryan-the porting is pretty easy to do- but get a junk housing to try it out on before you do it on youre good engine .

Street Port: do not try this at home. Complete engine rebuild & more than your average mechanic can handle.

Porting work, in general, is something that anyone can do. However, it takes a person with a real understanding of how things flow, a steady hand with the die grinder, and a lot of experience to do a really good porting job.

I've seen a lot of ported heads, the professionally done ones are well worth the cost. The DIYers get the job done, but lack the consistency and finish of a pro's work. I've seen more than a few ricers and rednecks who have pretty much ruined good heads because they lacked an understanding of what they were doing and got way too agressive with the Dremel.

IMHO if this is for your street or amatuer race car, get a spare engine and do it. If you are racing professionally, you've paid for a full-prep race car don't skimp on the porting.

If anyone as any pictures or comments on DIY porting I'd like to see/hear it. I'm saving up to do a 'Bathtub' rebuild on a 12A this summer.

No, I know they didn't port it when the shop tuned it. I purchased this car from a dealer and just tring to find out whats been done to it. I know it has a rebuilt 12A engine, no ideas how many miles ago, Racing Beat intake with Holley 4brl, no emissions, and MagnaFlow exhaust.

then it could easily be the carb. unless you know someone that has a great deal of experience that tunned it for you.

prolly not ported, with that setup there would be a nice increase of power over stock to maybe make you think it has been, also do you know the cfm rating of your carb?

I don't know the CFM of the carb. How can I find out?

I have looked around the carb for model numbers and haven't seen one. I haven't removed the carb. Is there a way to find out what model it is?

Does anyone know where to get documentation for the Racing Beat setup?

Model number is engraved on the choke tower. You will have to pull the air filter assymbly off to get a good look at it.

those carb kits - the holley's, they are notorios for creating a rough idle - it shouldnt be a drivability factor, but it is annoying when youre a pefectionist- oh by the way, does the tourqe seem to hit pretty hard at around 46oo rpm's with that holley? i'm thinking of getting one .
