Stock tunning

Since i had problems passing emission i took it to a shop that got it to pass emission, but now it runs and gets crap gas mileage. I want to get better then 15mpg, what jets, timing, ect are you guys running on your 12a to get the best mileage, and smooth drivablility. What kind of gas mileage can i expect from your tune.

Thanks,

Marc

Any modifications? Rat's nest on there?

Mine is bone stock, although a little worn, and I get high 19, low 20 mpg.

umm.. if you have a Bonez pipe where your catalytic converter should be, there's no way to pass emissions without doing what that shop did.. take some major shortcuts to reduce emissions at the expense of drivability.

Now that you're e-tested, un-do any changes they made, and you'll get back the drivability and performance that you had as a stock car with no cat.

The stock timing marks are an okay set of marks for timing. As for carb jets, the Nikki carb doesn't have readily (or easily) available jets for changing. Mazdatrix is pretty much the only place that has them, and even then they're expensive and the air bleeds aren't changeable. If you get your carb redone by Sterling, you'll be able to use 10/32" holley air bleeds as Jets and as Air Bleeds allowing a *lot* more carb tuneability.. of course a Sterling probably can't pass emissions either.

I think the main solution is to un-do what they did and go from there. If there's any danger of having to re-pass the test in the future, you won't be able to do any of the good performance and reliability mods we usually do, just concentrate on getting the car back to stock.

Why don't you ask them what they did? The only thing besides timing is the adjustment of air/fuel mixture to get it to pass. Being that you are in CO. You should be getting better mileage because of the altitude unless you are driving up and down some of the mountains.
