stock nikki help(search down)

well, search is down (at least for me) and i hope i can make this post, i'm looking for some help in dialing in my fuel mixture. First, a little bit about the car, it's a 82 with a fresh stock port 12a, with lightweight flywheel, underdrive pulley, header, bonez cat, and stock exhaust and stock nikki.

anyway, i read through sterling's webpage, and he suggested to start with the mixture screw 2 1/4 turn out and lean it out until it hunts... however, my car barely even idles at 2 1/4, i need like 3 -3.5 turns for it to idle right (at 750 rpm), does this mean i have a air leak somewhere? and this was done with a fully warmed up engine.

ok, second problem, my vacuum secondaries doesn't seem to be opening (I tested this by reving the car with the air cleaner top off and looking at the secondaries) what should i look at to fix this? I'm probabaly going to get a carb from sterling soon, but for now, i just want to get this to work.

Thanks,

Alvin

Not sure about the idle mixture. But I can tell you the vacuum secondaries will never open while the car is stopped, no matter how much you rev the engine.

Secondaries won't open up unless the motor has a load on it. You COULD wire the linkage to have mech. secondaries if you wanted. 2 1/4 turns is just a starting point on the mix screw. You can check for leaks and If you find one, there's your problem. I don't see anything wrong with having the screw out 3 turns though.

thanks guys, so is there anyway to determine if my secondaries are openning? It doesn't feel like they are, is there any sort of adjustments or anything like that?

Take a look at the FAQ page, it has a pictoral thread on wiring up your secondaries for mechanical operation. In stock form, there really isn't a burst of power when the secondaries open, power delivery is very linear. That being said, the car will be pretty slow without the secondaries operating, and getting to 60 MPH will require some patience.
