Stereo Install

near as I can figure, the wires from my Sony CDX-MP70 are as follows:

Grey + Grey w. black stripe = speaker
Purple + Purple w. black stripe = speaker
Green + green w. black stript = speaker
White + white w. black stripe = speaker
Orange = dimmer
black = ground
red = ignition power
yellow = constant power
light blue = ?
BLue + Blue w. white stripe = ?

Does anyone have experience with stereo installs? How can I tell which are for front speakers, which for rear, etc? And which are for the power antenna?

White = front left
Grey = front right
green = rear left
purple = rear right

wires with black on them are the negatives

Light blue is your power antenna
Blue/white remote turn on for amp

All from Sony web page

SONY MANAL For the speaker ones, I always forget but i think white and grey are front and purpand green are rear.

To check this just hook up the radio momentarily by combining the red an yellow to constant then of course ground then just hook up one speaker to a pair then balance and fade it out on the radio...make sence.

If I can find the exact colors ill get back to you. Some radios have the diagram on the underside of the radio.

As for the light blue and the blue w/white stripe those are your remote wires.

The blue w/white stripe is remote for your amp. (kinda like the red)

The other one might be for power antenna.

You could get the diagram from sony...wait...here...

Sony Manual

**** nm its not there... hold on.

Ok I was right...

LEFT --------------RIGHT
White - Front - Grey

Green - Rear - Purple

if you install an aftermarket deck you have to install an aftermarket antenna. the reason being our stock antennas use two seperate power lines for the up and down motion, which is soooo stupid. So your going to have to buy an aftermarket antenna, i picked one up from ebay cheap. there are some old threads about using a radioshack antenna that was just about a drop in replacement, but they no longer make them.

Also you might as well ditch the stock amp and run new lines to your speakers.

You don't have to install a new power antenna. You have to run the stock one thru a relay. That's all I did. Goes up and down when you turn the radio on and off. HTH.

I'll rip the relay out of Pamela - she just used the stock power antenna, and it worked fine...

you could have gone to a local auto stereo place and asked for a wiring harness and it would have plugged right up

except the previous owner had already hacked up the stock harness, and the Sony 18 pin plug was just bare wires coming out so wire-to-wire connections, in this case, made sense.

What I did do, though, was repair the 6 pin plug on the factory harness and put spade connectors on the constant power, ignition power, and dimmer signal wires and just plugged them in rather than splicing them in.

When i removed the old 6-disc changer from the glovebox (prone to skipping over even the smallest of bumps and with a signal wire incompatable with the remote plug on the Sony deck) I had to not only replace the glovebox, which had been shattered at the back to allow the large unit to fit through, but redo the wiring for the glove box switch and illumination light. For some reason the previous owner had cut into those wires to power an LCD stck stuffed under the dash, where its light output was invisible to occupants.
