Steering Problem Need Help!

ok my steering has about a half of turn in play. i move it back and forth and the wheel doesnt turn. so i tried to adjust the steering box. nothing happened. i replaced all of my steering components, tie rods, control arms, bushings and everything. nothing happened. so then i went and bought a new steering box and installed it. not as much play, but my steering wheels still toggles back and forth about 2 inches each way. so i adjusted the new box, and nothing happened. is there supposed to be play in the steering wheel on these cars???? please help me out. any help with this would be appreciated.

As long as you have confirmed that all of the front end parts are good and tight, then adjusting the steering box would be the next step. However, you have to make sure that you adjust it in the proper manner (not like you would find on a piston engine, even though it may look the same).

A common mistake many diyers make is adjusting the steering box 1st, instead of checking the rest of the components. This often leads to overtightening of the steering box which leads to acellerated wear at the least, permanent damage ate the most.

Order of service and repair should be as follows: Idler arm, tierods and adjusters, ball joints, LCA and tension rod bushings, wheel bearings, then the steering sector and pitman arm. Struts/springs should also be in serviceable condition.

Another thing to consider is did you buy a brand new steering sector or a used one with perhaps the same problems as the old one.

How much did all those front end replaces cost you? This is one area I am deeply concerned about hammering out with mine, though it's not nearly as bad as you stated. I'd just like to make things as good as possible.

Best prices for those parts seems to be through Rock Auto online. They have the good Moog idler arm too. Rock Auto also has a discount code, perhaps someone who has a current one will post it up. You will also need an alignment after installing the new parts.
