Steering help needed

Dear all, greetings from Downunder!

Hope someone can help. The car is an '81 (we called them SII) started life as a 12a Auto. Has evolved somewhat and has competed for the past 6 years in Road Rally events. It's light, well braked makes plenty of power and is an overall good thing....

but....the steering is my next engineering challenge. The stock recirculating ball is too slow (4+ turns lock to lock), too slack and too heavy (-2.9 degrees of camber and +8 degrees castor).

What is the best fix??

Is there a better/faster steering box and hasanyone tried fitting electric power assist??

Cheers
Brett

Unfortunatly you're not going to find much, other than the fact that the rest of us are just as unhappy with the steering on our 7's. Respeed is making a rack and pinion kit to be released sometime soon, but that won't help you since your car is right hand drive. There are other options, like swapping the whole subframe from a second gen rx7 in, but thats a lot of work, and there isn't a whole lot of documentation on it out there. The second option is make something custom. I'm sure thats not what you wanted to hear, but its the unfortunate truth. I'm just waiting for the respeed kit to come out....

just as I feared 82transam.

Oh well, I'm up for the challenge. I'm off to the wreckers to pick up a rack and I've got the electric power steer unit and harness from an MGf lying around in the workshop so here goes......

I believe that you can use a power steering gear box without hooking up the power part of it. This gear box has a higher ratio than the manual...
