Steering column interchangability?

Ive got a question. What problems might i run into putting an 85 steering column and gearbox into my 79?

The column in the 79 is loose on the inside, and the box is sloppy. anyway... any advice from people who have done this? How did you change out the combination switch and lock without breaking anything?

Should be no problem. Like I was telling you about at the meet, I just put the '85 box and column into my '82. Only thing I noticed was the mounting for the ign. switch is in a slightly different place. So it doesn't line up with the hole in the surround anymore. No big deal. To get the bolts holding the ign. switch, I just took my cutoff wheel and cut a slot in them and used a flathead screwdriver.

Lemme know if you need a hand...

cool, i might take you up on that. on your 82, do you have a lever for you headlights and a **** for the windsheild wipers? Just wondering if the SAs are the only ones that are *** backwards.

If you go for the 84-85 box get the powersteering one. It has a tighter ration than the others I think it is about 2.7 compared to 3.4 not sure though. I jacked the front of my car up and turned the wheel and counter the turns of the steering wheel.

Yeah, you should be OK if doing the box and column at the same time. I've noticed that the end of the colun and the way it fits with the box changed somewhere along the line. The earlier column fits over the shaft collar on the box, while the laer fits *inside* the collar. Ran into that putting a later column in my '79 (because I hate the '79-80 completely illogical combination switch. Yes, that much!)
Ended up, um, un-collapsing both columns, and using the later upper column, and '79 lower.
See here.
