steering colum and turn switch removal?

Help! 2 problems. I cant figure out how to get the steering column out., and I can't get the multi function switch off of the column. I want to remove everything from the car, the steering box, column, and switch.

The engine is out of the car, the steering box is unbolted from the chassis, the column is unbolted from the underside of the dash, and the steering wheel is off.

How do I remove the turn signal/wiper switch?

How do I get the steering column out? Does it need to be separated somehow in order to pull it through the hole in the firewall? It seems to either be 2 pieces, or there is something around it which makes it too big to fit through the firewall hole.

This is a S3 (85) with power steering.

Thanks.

the combination swich is removed by one 8mm bolt that provides retention to the colum by squeezing, like a hose clamp to the steering shaft itself. the bolt provides tension much like a band or hose clamp would. not exactly the same, but you get the idea in concept.
the steering box is held to the subframe by three 14mm through bolts. once those are removed, you will need to remove the pitman arm from the steering box(for complete disassembly or just remove it from teh drag ), make sure you're ALL unbolted inside of the car and pull the shaft through the firewall and lift the shaft and box out as one.
