OH Steering box/column interchangability?

Are there any differences in the steering boxes between years? I have an 85 with power steering, and want to convert to a manual box for my CSP car. Just seeing if I have to stay away from any certain boxes from certain years. I saw that mazdatrix has different part numbers for different years, so I am guessing there are some differences, but wondering if they are big are not.

Thanks,

Jason

In a related question, I have an '84 GS with manual steering. Wife won't drive it without power steering. Wife driving = $$$ to put into car How can I convert to power steering and where can I get the bolt on for it. I assume I can do this bolt-on. Thanks

For manual conversion, need the steering box and column, for power conversion, same as manual along with the pump, lines and cooling tube. Either swap is a direct bolt in. As far as interchangeability between years, I believe all the FBs interchange, not sure about the SAs. The 85 FSM has a complete line drawing of the PS system, Sec. 10B, p. 2. Good reference diagram. I used it to convert to PS on the widebody.

Some have said the coulumn isn't needed, but I found it made the swap easier, don't recall why though.

If you don't want P/S then just remove the pump and run the lines back into the gear box. Mine has been like this for years.

In addition to the parts that Trochoid listed you need the P/S bracket with the adjuster and of course a new belt.

I can't do that and be legal in CSP (I wanted to). I contacted the SCCA to confirm, and was told no-go. I have to do a complete swap to a manual box to be legal.

Thanks,

Jason

SCCA? Yeah, that sounds about right.
