I put a 79 box in an 84 and it bolted right in. The later boxes are supposed to be better tho

I just took the steering box and column out of my 81 and put it in my 85, it bolted right in and is 100% compatible. All I had to do was twist the upper part of the column a little so the steering lock would align properly with the ignition switch.

I have a question though, is there a way to seperate the box and column? I read the manual I had and it said that they could not be seperated so I had to replace them as one peice, and it was a huge pain in the nuts to get it in and out.... Especially doing it by myself...

I have seen that they come out as one piece.

They can be separated and it is covered in the FSM. However afterwards you have to reset the preload of the worm shaft.I believe that the manual steering gear boxes themselves are all the same 81-85. The difference is in the columns(slight as it may be) and that in 84-85 I remember that the actual spline or depth of the mount for the steering wheels is different than the earlier models. I researched every thing I could to see if there were any major differences and came up with notta.
