I'm pretty sure there were only 2 steering gears used on the 1st gen. Manual, and power.
They will interchange without any mods, so long as the entire power steering system is added/deleted as needed.

Yes your steering box should swap with no compatibility issues at all. I recently replaced mine and it was a huge pain in the nuts... I read the manual about it and it said that the steering column and box cannot be seperated..... so I had to fight the whole god damn thing in and out of my engine bay with the pitman arm still attached because I did not want to lose the exact position it was in. After everything was all said and done, I had to remove the hood and drivers side hood mount hinge, battery and holder, ac pump (had to go anyway), some wires, and I remember bending a brake line past the comfort zone....
It was such a close fit that I had to put the new assembly in upside down with the pitman arm in the blades of the radiator fan and rock it in that way (I got the old one out by the reverse process), then very carefully work it into position around all the crap on that side of the car.
I hope I was just stupid for listening to the haynes manual and there is an easier way, It was a little annoying.
Good luck!
*edit I also would have found it much easier to get it back in to have a friend help me line up the steering column inside the car as I lined the box up with the holes on the frame and the rest of the steering linkage, I had to get up and down from under the car 4 or 5 times when it could have slid right in with 2 people. Hey, that sounds kind of like an innuendo.
