starting question??

My 85 se used to start right-a-way and the tach will jump to around 1500 and eventually idle at 800 after about 3 minutes. Lately, the car will die if I just start the car without giving a little gas. If I just touch the gas paddle just a bit, the tach will jump to 1500 and idle at 800 in a few minutes. The plugs, wire, and filter are all new. The car otherwise runs fine. Any ideas ????

How would the ignition switch affect the need of giving the car some gas for it to stay on when starting??

Do you mean that the tach jumps around seeming to be not reading the real rpms of the engine or is the engine jumping with the tach?

If it's just the tach jumping then your trailing ignitor is bad. - easy fix.

same prob with mine.. but i bought mine already like this.. gotta give it gas twice and pull the choke whilst starting it..

after that.. it should start right-a-way with no choke... but still have to give it a bit of gas whilst its started .. like rev it just to let it remember its idling is high..

also i dun understand why mine idles at 0 or just above 0..

when i put it in nuetral.. it idles just above 0.. when i put it in drive.. RIGHT ON 0!

is there anyhting i need to adjust

The tach doesn't jump around at all. In the past at strat up, the tach will go right to 1500 or so first, then as the car warms up it will drop down to around 800 gradually. I am just puzzled now why I have to give it gas before I strat the car in order for the car to stay on. By the way the car is FI not carburated.

I figured out the problem. It was the actuators! I had removed the actuators and that was the reason for the engine to die at initial start up without tapping the gas. since then, I reinstalled the actuators. The car now starts right up and idles at 400 and with a light tap on the gas it idles at 1500 and then rest at 800 when engine warms up.
