starting new project, need your opinion, bridge, street or basic?

Ok after a few races I blew my last engine. I went from street driving, to drag, to circuit racing and now I plan to drag and possibly use the car sometimes to go to work...

Ok so my dilema is the following, I already have a set of apex carbon seals, I also have like new atkins stock apex seals. I have like 4 different core engines to choose from and my current in-car engine just died. It suffers from the common hard-to-start-when-hot symptom, exhibits low comp when hot and ok when cold. I presume the old side seals I reused are just bad and will need new ones.

Can you suggest what would be the most cost effective solution to rebuild my 12a?

I want a bridge port and already have the templates and engine cores. The only problem I have is getting a complete kit that includes the side seals new for a small amount of $. I just don't want to spend a grand on seals.

Any suggestions?

well timmya2 that is what I'm trying to figure out...usually the sideseals are not needed for a normal rebuild but I have rebuilt my engines so many times that I need to get new ones and a complete overhaul kit is expensive...

I wish I could get my hand on cheap kit for less than $300 that includes everything I need. I don't need apex seals...but I need all the soft seals, o rings, and side seals. Could it be possible?

over here in aus, theres two types of seal kits you can buy. 1: Complete rebuild kit (contains all seales gaskets and rotor seals) about $1200 AUD... the other is the gasket kit(all soft seals excluding rotor seals... rotor=apex corner side and oil selas and rings and springs for the rotors) that kit is about $190

Im building a 12a bridgey and im using stock mazda seals.... i was lucky and for $1100AUD i picked up a 12a extend, 48ida webber and manifold, 1 ton pressure plate, lightened flywheel and some header..... the cool thing is i know the bloke i got it off and the engine he had rebuilt with an official mazda seal kit, he tried to start it... and it didnt, so he bump started it, drove it for about 1km... and decided that the housings had low compression (crap housings) so he sold it to me.... ive saved almost every seal and gasket so im laughing

im using stock mazda seals on my bridgey... but im not planning to rev over 8500-9000.. i should just be lucky

By all means use all NEW seals, gaskets, oil rings, and bearings for a race motor or you'll just be pulling it apart later.

Since you are a circuit racer, you can buy parts @ cost directly from Mazda.

Bridgeport it. You can use the same intake manifold you use now. My 12a J-Bridge with ceramics put 205 to the wheels. Dellorto 48dhla 42mm chokes, lake cities intake manifold and good exhaust system.

A 51+mm IDA will get me 10-20hp more but narrow the powerband and shift it up higher. REQUIRING me to get a $5-10k close ratio tranny to stay in my powerband. Not in budget.

Also be sure to use the 3rd gen rear oil pressure regulator, shim front regulator 1/8", 17.5mm hardened oil pump and clearance the rotors, e-shaft and 3 window bearings so it will live @ 9600rpms.
