Starting "The Backyard Mechanics' Co-op"
Carl and I are forming a joint venture company called "Backyard Performance Parts".
The purpose of "BPP" is to present rotary enthusiasts with less expensive alternative performance parts for their cars that rival the known brands in both performance gains and build quality. (Often, the later is quite easy to do. )
This is what our carbs are all about.
We have seen some real high-quality efforts on these boards of persons fabricating all kinds of parts in limited quantities.
We want to start a co-op or guild of people that are making things for rotary powered cars that either are producing them for others, or will concider doing so.
Certain criterion (as yet undefined) needs to be met in order to maintain quality standards.
It's free, and anyone who is serious about producing and selling parts and accessories are invited to join.
Once you are a member, you may be asked for project updates.
A page, or possibly as many as three (yet to be decided) will be dedicated to your efforts.
If you have the means, you can design your own pages, and I'll simply put them up as is. If you do NOT have the means to revamp pages and send them to me to download, then no pricing will be allowed only for the reason that I can't afford to sit and update price lists for everyone. But email addys and links, etc, photos, all that stuff will be there if you want.
We reserve the right to edit pages as we feel necessary.
We absolve ourselves from any responsibilities of any transactions you have.
We absolve ourselves from responsibility regarding disputes of any kind.
We reserve the right to investigate claims of shoddy workmanship or business practices, which can result in the termination of membership yadda yadda yadda.
(In order for this to work, every member has to be clean.)
It's just one site, but it's a chance to gather all of the hidden gems of talent we accidently stumble across, and start a directory of craftspersons that do great things.
I'm hoping to also start a gallery. This will be good for Co-op members that decide they no longer wish to produce parts. They can have their efforts and services comemorated in a gallery when they "retire" from production.
I encourage everyone who thinks they can benifit to contact me via PM.
Group purchases is another section I would like to add to the Co-op. We've seen some come and go on the Forums, but if there was an area specific to that purpose, the Co-op would become a "cooperative association" as the name suggests, and maybe both members and visitors could get some tools or parts at low costs.
But that's a whole other project for the future.
Tell me what you all think.

great idea, I will think of anything that I can do and then get back to you. I know i've done quite a bit to my car myself, including fabricating my own RB dissassembled road race header .. etc.

Great idea. I could have a few things, but I don't know if my workmanship is good enough. I am currently working on new S5 look tail lights. The ones on my car now are "cheap" but look good. But the quality of the work is ****. I'm trying to find a way to do it without removing the outer lense.
I have also made an adapter for the stock nikki carb to an aftermarket air cleaner. I could market this if there is enough demand. Quality isn't the absolute best on this either, but that can be improved if I improve my welding skills.
I know the lights aren't exactly performance oriented, but I think they look really great on my car as a visual enhancement. Some people care for visuals and others for performance.

Airflow is my life
Well this is really Sterlings baby so all the credit goes his way. I for one think its a great idea. A clearinghouse of sorts for a bunch of us 1st gen kooks still willing to develop stuff for this limited and highly price motivated market.

Well, unfortunately at this point my skills aren't quite good enough to make anything presentable right away. With some practice though, I could do what I do quite well. I will admit that I am impressed with how things have turned out so far, but its not up to your standards.
Once my new lights are finished, I will have to see how professional they actually look. Most of the things I have done so far are very noticably done by an amature, but I'm learning VERY fast. I've just gotta find a place that sells Niteshades around here.

BTW, This is an invitation to EVERYONE.
This is for the benifit of rotary-engine enthusiasts, and I won't let petty conflicts of interest compromise the project...including my own.

I'm not saying I'm not going to take part. I WILL take part even if I give my ideas to someone else to use to make something of use. I've go SOO many ideas that I just can't keep up. I have ideas for a torque brace, modded intake manifolds, custom center console peices, among other things. My ideas are almost endless but I just can't test all of them because I don't even have the funds to put my car on the road.

Just to let you know I'm really nifty mechanically and believe I can help out. I'm just so damn unsure of what, give me some ideas mabye? Just email me I check daily. Oh and I work with a machine shop, so I know how to clean, bead blast ect all that stuff.

a machine shop eh??? lots of great things can come of that. just look at coldy13 with his awesome carb hats ( i can vouch for that as i own one) hmmm do you get a good deal on custom created pieces?

This is a engine-based machine shop. Lets just say we're greatful that our engine parts dont way anywhere near the other things that go boing. I've had a really hard time with a 4 cyl crank once.. I could have took my foot off, though it was a diesel with HUGE gear in the middle... I also had to deliver a 350 myself, alone... I basically just dropped it on the ground and threw the rest of the parts on it and flew back to the shop.. that sucked.
PS I meant like in the range of he's got a $40,000 machine drill press or wtf it does, and he made my intake manifold look like it was platinum like bling-bling.

Honestly, if the part works well and costs less I'd buy it. Most of the work making parts pretty is a matter of labor which is free if you DIY but costs a lot if you dont. The reason that ugly, but working, parts don't sell already is because there isn't much quality assurance or guarantee aside from the sellers word and internet rumors.
Ya got a good plan here. I'll set some cash aside and buy something once its going.

We got customers before we even got products!
I have slashdawg and pratch already offering web services (so you don't have to worry about it being lame like my present site! ).

We got customers lining up before we even have products to sell!
Folks, you can't beat that kind of incentive with a stick!
(Ehhh, BTW, nevarmore; I got the deed to a bidge in NYC. You could make a killing on the tolls, man! )
-Just kidding.

another great idea for some of this would be for some of us first gen guys to prototype some of the ideas, and then make templates and distribute them around making a DIY a lot easier and more cost effective. I know shipping from the states is what stops me from doing most good ideas. Another great thing would be if someone could fiberglass some pods to mount up front where the stock front speakers are that house 6.5" speakers. I personally would love it if they were angled across correctly - eg. the passenger side aims directly at the drivers head, and vice versa. They would be light, ship easily, could be made with a mold quite quickly and then could be carpeted or covered later.

On the flip side, if you want an employee or an Ohio/West PA Sales rep I'm your man.

Finish work...
First...Sterling...more power to you and this forum!
For those of us that may not be able to contribute machining skills, welding, technical knowledge. etc. We could very well provide the finish work. You know the stuff that takes time away from the really tough core work...stuff like sourcing, prepping, cleaning, sanding, priming, paint, etc.
Again, I'm not an "expert" at any of this stuff, but, I would be willing to learn. Anybody else think this might work?
For example, guy number one makes a custom cold air intake, guy number two finishes it and delivers it to the buyer.
Hopefully shipping between workers wouldn't be cost prohibitive.
