Starter wont turn over the motor?

So i am trying to prime my oil system with the power of the battery. I have the starter on and the connections made when i ground the cable to the battery the starter just engages the flywheel but wont turn the engine over. I have done this before in the same scenario as i have now and this worked with my 12a. I am using a 12a starter on an S5 fengine. What is the matter? I have 3 other starters and did the same thing with them too. Any insight would be great. I have a feeling this is something easy.

My battery is good, my wires are good. voltage is 12.20 in that range this is outa the car on an engine stand with the cluth and pressure plate hooked up. The motor you can rotate over with 19mm socket and breaker bar smoothly. The starter wont rotate the engine over its 12 volt power but engages the flywheel. I have no clue. This is the same starter the had started the SE recently too.

Do you have the negative cable hooked up to the engine on a clean spot? Should work for you if you have done it before.

sounds like you don't have enough juice to start you car. throw a charger on it for a while, or give it a jump for some extra power to crank it over.

This motor is on an engine stand. My battery reads 12.25. I just recently got the starter to spin but it wont engeage and spin and if it does it sounds like a machine gun.?????????? There are 3 terminal on the back of the solenoid. which terminal is the spade connector is that positive or what?

spade terminal on the solenoid is the trigger wire (+) for your starter.

Should I hook up power to the spade terminal also. So Id have one stud (the one without the cable running into the starter) + and the other - both going to the battery and the spade terminal wire feeding off the 12v+ off the solenoid?

Heavy cable from large terminal (with out the wire going into the starter) to battery +
Heavy cable from long starter bolt to Battery -
When +12V is connected to the spade terminal the starter should turn the engine if everything is working properly.

hook up the negative cable by the starter bolt or something. The spade terminal is what the ignition switch triggers when you turn the key to the start position. Can't hook up a constant 12V to it or it'll just keep running the starter. Get a remote starter or get a wire with an alligator clip on it and just touch the spade terminal when you want to turn the starter over.

When you get a hammer sound from your starter, thats the solenoid TRYING to engage. Your battery is DEAD and needs to be charged. Ya you read 12.2V which is low (see below) but your trying to pull hundreds of amps to start, and with your battery's state, you don't have enough amperage to do that.

Open Circuit Voltage ~ State-of-charge
12.65 V 100 %
12.45 V 75 %
12.24 V 50 %
12.06 V 25 %
11.89 V 0 %

your sitting at like a 50% charge

One other thing to consider is the AMPs that are being pulled from the battery. If not enough amps then you will not crank the car either. I'm not sure if that is your problem just something else to think about.
