Starter motor spinning. No engine cranking

Gurus, please help me!I just finished installing a turbo2 tranny in my fb... It came with a used turbo 2 starter. I went to start it up, and I could hear the starter motor spinning, but the engine wouldn't turn over, so I figured the overrunning clutches in the starter must be bad. I bought a new one {remanufactured}. Same thing. However, if I try to start it in gear it lunges forward, so what does that mean. by the way, the nuetral safety switch is capped off on this tranny as was my previous one. If anyone can help me I really would appreciate it!

Sometimes a 'remanufactured' starter is defective. I installed 2 rebuilts last summer and they both worked, one from Bosch and one from rockauto, but I've had defective starters in the past from local shops.

He says the car lunges forward if its in gear, meaning the starter is engaging the flywheel. This is a strange problem indeed.

It would be impossible to mate the engine and gearbox using an n/a flyhweel. The TII box requires the larger diamater clutch which will only work with the larger flywheel.

Are you sure the engine's not turning? Maybe you've got no compression. lol

hmm........very odd. i don't see how having it in gear would affect it working or not. it doesn't grind at all when you attempt to start does it?

My turbo2 tranny is mated up to a 89 streetported engine with only 12000 miles on it. It has always run perfectly. I am using a turbo2 lightwieght flywheel, turbo2 centerforce stage 2 clutch and obviosly a turbo2 starter. It doesn't grind when I try to start it, just sounds like the starter motor is not engaging the flywheel. Thats why I tried to start it in gear, just to see if it would engage, and it did. I am very confused right about now. Thanks for all the suggestions.

just a shot in the dark... maybe your ring gear is missing a few teeth? have you turned the eccentric pulley at all, then try to start?

Its a brand new lightweight steel flywheel, no teeth are bad. but yes, I tried turning my eccentric pulley to listen for compression. sounded good. Tried to start it again, same thing. Tonight when I get off work Ill remove the dust cover on the tranny and get an assistant to try starting it while I look at the flywheel to see if it is spinning. Also Im going to look to see if the pulleys on the front of the engine turn when someone tries to start it. but I appreciate the suggestion.

So I got my little brother to try cranking it, while I looked at the front pulleys. And they were turning... It just sounds so much different with a lightweight flywheel and a new starter. Damn I must be a newbie...

I told you.. no compression. It sounds just the same as when the starter drive is slipping.

Maybe you need to dump a little oil in the sparkplug holes to encourage the apex seals to seal for a start. Maybe they dried out and won't seal until you get some oil in there. I always shoot a little in when the car has been setting for years.

I noticed as well that my S4 NA engine cranked real quickly compared to the stock 12A. Almost like there is no compression but I know the engine I have is good. Was running not too long ago.

Probably just flooded, which also makes it sound differently. Dump a little oil down the carb (if it has one) or the spark plug holes, then try to start again. This will help rebuild the compression after a good flooding.
