You can replace the fusible links with the fuses that the 2nd gen fuse block uses. Top to bottom 20/25-50/60-20/25. Top and bottom fuses are for the headlights, center one is for the body. If you need a wiring diagram, link to the FSMs is in my sig line.

trochoid,
the link is not on the wheel strut, it is underneath the car. It is attached directly to the starter

Is there one spliced in now? If so, post a pic. Sounds like someone has been rewiring. Is it spliced in on the positive battery cable, or the ignition wire? Either way there is no reason for it unless there is a wiring fault somewhere else.

thx trochoid, it goes to the solenoid cold terminal, and is obviously from the ignition (it is a slender wire), and not the huge positive cable from the battery.

It is the the terminal that will start the starter when touched with the + jumper cable while the starter is out of the car.

I have a thirty amp fuse on it now.

Someone added the fuse in then, it's not oem. If they were trying to protect the wiring, 30 amp is way too big for the ignition wire. I would take it out.

the pdf for my year of car given by the link you posted above shows a 0.5 sq fusable link.

In semicondutors, that is the resistance of a flat rectanglar resistor metal structure that is 1/2 as wide as it is long. If 1.25 sq is 45 amps, then 0.5 sq is 18 amps

Anyway , it looks like it goes to the hot start motor. Never connected it, never needed to. I tomarrow, I will try to start the care with the fuse link disconnected
