Speedometer acting weird...

Hey guys, I have a problem i figured if anyone knew what it is you guys would.

anyways, I bought a new guage cluster for my 84 se, and I got it in ( MAJOR pain in the *** i might add) and everything was fine the speedo worked for a few days and I was happy, but then this morning i get in my car and take off to go home from work and I look down and my speedo is at zero, I'm like ohh crap the cable came off or something, so i drive the rest of the way home and noticed when I turned it went up to about 15 mph but eratically.

so I get home turn it off check the cable coming out the firewall and get back in and take off and everything was perfect... tried it several times i yanked on the cable a little bit to see if it was just hanging on but it seems to be on there well, and it didn't do it again...

Does anyone have a idea about what this might have been??? I REALLY don't want to take the whole thing out to take a look unless I have to. I mean... the speedo is all mechanical correct?

Yes I lubed the cable plug. Could it be my guage cluster? i don't see why it would work and then not work for one drive then work again, I'm at my wits end about what to do. I was wondering if maybe someone else had this problem before and if they figured out what it was, bad cable? bad cluster? bad transmission??? please help! I'm a noob to cars in general but I'm learning a lot.

Thanks in advance for your help

Matt
