The speedometer cable is likely broken.

Getting the gauge cluster out to change it is sort of a pain. Getting it loose from the transmission and out of the car is easy.

Get a new speedo cable. Fairly straight foward. Order one from a parts store. I think '79-85 has been discontued because I had to get a '86-92 one when I replaced mine 5years ago. Simply Unscrew the connector at the back of the tranny before the driveshaft. Then the fun part: Getting the dash apart to get to the other end.

You need to take off the screws holding the speedo cluster in place. and carefully tilt it foward and down and get mad as you unplug the old one and put on the new one throught the fire wall and hook it on.

Note: taking the steering wheel makes this whole process a little easier. Think its a 19mm nut behind the center horn cover.

Yeah, I had to replace the cable on mine with one off an FC. I tried to just swap inner cables, but they are different lengths, the FC one is longer by about 1.5 inches.

Mine didnt break, it just came off the trans one day and the inner cable came out.

YEah, that is the only difference. So you have more slack in back of the speedo cluster, which is better!

Anyway, mine was hanging down by the tranny since a connector to the underbody was missing. Then I snagged something while driving down the highway and BOOM, no speedo. Now I got zip ties everywhere to hold it up close to the underbody.

Thats what happened to mine. But I replaced the entire cable anyways. My dad unhooked mine from the cable...he did it from underneathe the dash somehow. He layed in the drivers side floor and did it from behind...and then it just screws right into the tranny. I got a used one for my FC. Ask anyone with a parts car.

You can get to an FC one from the floor, but not the one in a first gen. Right where you need to put your hand is blocked off.

Iv'e had the cluster out of mine so many times I can do it in about 2 minutes with the steering wheel on.
