Spare Tire.. FAIL!

When i Put my spare on the rear drivers side, i get a bad grinding almost scrapping noise, i think lug nuts are going in too deep? with no lug nuts in it makes no noise when i turn it, with them in i can hear clicking and scrapping. Anyone have this happen or know anything on it?
I also put the spare on while it was flat and drove a few feet before i realized it was, could this have cause damage on the inside drum assembly?
Im running late and have to leave, so im gonna have to drive with it as is.. hope something doesnt fail while im driving..

When you get back, look to see where the damage is, and you will be able to answer your question as to if it was a bad idea or not.

lol it WAS a bad idea and i KNEW better than to drive with it like that....
the issue is with the spare tire on, the lug nuts go too deep and they make contact with a spring in my drum brake.. never had a lug nut be too long.. or could it be my spring isnt where it should be, its the spring on the top side of the assembly.

the wheel bolts probably protruded to deep past the flange. are you using the original bolts? or are they aftermarket?

When these cars came from the factory there were two lengths of wheel bolts. Long ones for the alloy wheels and short ones for the steel wheels. Sounds like yours were the long ones.

HAHA thats exactly what i was thinking to myself, ''how the hell did i let myself do that? " lol it didnt look flat at the time it wasnt fully deflated. got my original tire back on, it was pretty scary driving with that awful noise..
thanks for the thoughts on long/short lug nuts, wish i had the shorter ones that came with.. i wonder if this same issue will occur with the front ( disk brakes ) wouldnt want to hurt my rotar

haha this reminds me of the time i had a flat in my gf's 85 gs so i jack it up, put the original spare on with the original tire on the spare( i should have known better but i was stuck on the side of the road) let the car down and its halfway deflated but i think oh well im only going about 4 miles. so i get in the car and it rolls like 3 feet and the spare pops and the tire starts tearing apart, so i had to walk home to get a wheel off my car then walk back rolling a wheel lol. oh fun times in the 7

A LOT of spares in peoples trunks are flat. I personally check mine occasionally (usually every oil change), old habit from working in an auto shop that checked them as part of a basic service (not many shops do this anymore).

Personally before I drove it with noise like that, I would have put the spare up front, and the front on the rear - assuming no interference on the front also.

Speaking of flat spare tires, is there a place online that sells spare TIRES? I looked on tire rack and couldnt pick a size that small. I figured that not very many people actually change the spare tire itself but with the age of our cars it seems like a good idea.

My spare tire is now an original FB aluminum rim since my spare is as old as the car according to the tire shop I brought it to. I picked up 2 FB rims for cheap just for spares in case something happens. The tread is gone on both of them, but they still hold air and would get me a lot farther than that dinky old spare. If somewhere actually sold spare tires, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't sell them in a 13" size - sad but true.
